Boca Raton, Florida, USA - The countdown is on for the 15th Annual White Coats-4-Care (WC4C) fundraising reception hosted by Florida Atlantic University’s Charles E. Schmidt College of Medicine (CoM). Scheduled for August 12 at 6 p.m. at The Addison of Boca Raton, this year’s event will welcome 80 incoming medical students, marking a significant milestone for the college and the community. The reception aims to bolster scholarship funds, advance innovation in medical education, support research initiatives, and expand community health efforts, as noted by the Boca Raton Tribune.

The Addison has stepped up by awarding a Centennial Grant to the FAU Foundation for this initiative, helping to sustain 10 nonprofit missions. With a growing emphasis on medical education, this event showcases the collaborative spirit of civic leaders, healthcare professionals, and community advocates, all coming together under the enthusiastic leadership of co-chairs Bonnie and Jon Kaye.

Supporting Local Healthcare

This year’s graduating class is no small feat, with nearly 36% of the class set to remain in Florida for residency training—an essential contribution to addressing our healthcare workforce gap. In fact, 25% of the graduates are heading into primary care fields, a vital area for community health. The Schmidt College of Medicine adds a feather in its cap by offering ACGME-accredited residency and fellowship programs across a range of specialties, ensuring that the future medical workforce is well-equipped to meet local needs.

The incoming class was carefully selected from an impressive pool of 4,620 applicants, boasting a mean MCAT score of 516 and a GPA of 3.81. With the college now employing 101 faculty members and accommodating 288 medical students, it’s clear that the need for innovative medical education is being met with enthusiasm and commitment. Recent construction projects include the Sam W. Klein Student Hub and a cutting-edge auditorium, elevating the educational experience even further.

For those wishing to contribute, various sponsorships are available. A Chief Resident sponsorship at $10,000 not only supports the medical school’s expansion but also includes tickets to the event. Other options range from $250 to $20,000 and provide benefits like educational support for students and recognition during the event. Noteworthy offerings include a White Coat sponsorship, where donors can see their names included in a medical student’s first white coat, giving a personal touch to the contribution.

Addressing the Healthcare Gap

Efforts to fill the healthcare void in Florida don’t stop at education. Programs like the Florida Reimbursement Assistance for Medical Education (FRAME) aim to encourage qualified medical professionals to serve in underserved areas. These programs provide financial assistance to help offset educational expenses, a crucial step in ensuring more healthcare providers are available where they are needed most. For example, eligible physicians can receive up to $150,000 over four years to tackle their loan burden as they contribute to their communities.

In which ways can you contribute? Whether through sponsorship or promoting initiatives like FRAME, every action counts in strengthening our healthcare system and making a tangible difference in our communities. Let’s rally together and support the future of medicine in Florida!
