Tragic Bicycle Crash Claims Life in Boynton Beach: Investigation Underway

South Congress Avenue and Buccaneer Road, Boynton Beach, Florida, USA - On the evening of July 11, 2025, a tragic incident in Boynton Beach claimed the life of a bicyclist. The Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office has confirmed that the fatal crash occurred around 10:56 p.m. at the intersection of South Congress Avenue and Buccaneer Road. Preliminary findings suggest that the bicyclist was traveling southwest across South Congress Avenue when a southbound 2021 Toyota Venza struck him. Sadly, the impact resulted in the bicyclist’s death at the scene.

The victim has been identified as Juan Rolando Villeda Rivera, and his next of kin has been notified. The driver of the vehicle, Angelo Ismael Munguia, was taken to JFK Hospital for undisclosed medical reasons. As it stands, no charges have been filed, and the case is currently under active investigation. Investigators J. Concerning Trends in Bicycle Safety

This latest incident adds to a troubling trend regarding traffic safety in Palm Beach County. According to Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office, the area ranks fifth in Florida for serious traffic injuries and fatalities involving pedestrians and cyclists among counties with populations over 300,000. Between January 1, 2024, and November 19, 2024, the county recorded 1,542 collisions involving pedestrians and cyclists, resulting in 51 fatalities and 144 serious injuries.

In an effort to combat these alarming statistics, the Sheriff’s Office has initiated High Visibility Enforcement (HVE) details at key intersections throughout the county. This initiative, funded through a partnership with the University of North Florida and the Florida Department of Transportation, aims to enhance awareness of traffic laws and improve safety for both drivers and cyclists. While these enforcement efforts focus on education, violations can still lead to warnings or citations.

Bicycle Accidents on the Rise

The situation becomes even more worrisome when considering the overall statistics for bicycle accidents in the county. A review by Barthelette Law reveals that there were 654 bicycle accidents reported between January and December 14, 2023. Out of these, a staggering 627 — 96% — involved injuries. Although there were only 11 fatal accidents that year, down from 14 in 2022, the total number of incidents reflects a significant increase from 486 accidents in 2022.

This upswing in bike-related accidents can be partly attributed to a surge in bicycle sales during the pandemic, a trend echoed nationwide. To put things into perspective, Broward County reported 837 bicycle accidents in 2023, which, interestingly, is about 183 more than those documented in Palm Beach County.
