Today is July 3, 2026, and folks in Macomb County are gearing up for a fun-filled Independence Day weekend! With most public beaches open for swimming, it’s looking like a great time to hit the water and soak up some sun. If you’re planning to make a splash, you’ll want to know the latest updates.
According to the Macomb Daily, the only beach currently closed is the Veterans Memorial Park Beach in St. Clair Shores. Sadly, this beach has been shut since June 18 due to high bacteria levels from an unknown source. It’s a bummer, especially when everyone’s craving a dip in the cool water during the hot summer days!
Beach Updates and Safety
Many of us may not realize that beach closures often stem from elevated E. coli levels. These bacteria can be found in our environment, in food, and even within the guts of humans and animals. After heavy rainfall or strong winds, these levels can spike due to runoff and sewage overflows. You might be wondering, “Is E. coli always dangerous?” Well, while some strains are harmless, others can lead to unpleasant conditions like diarrhea, urinary tract infections, and even respiratory issues. Yikes!
Luckily, some beaches are still open and ready for visitors! Lake St. Clair Metropark and the Baypoint and Eastwood beaches at Stony Creek Metropark in Shelby Township welcome swimmers. There’s also the Walter and Mary Burke Park Beach in New Baltimore, which is perfect for a day out with family or friends. Just make sure to check the latest updates before diving in!
Future Plans for Veterans Memorial Park Beach
In a bid to revitalize the Veterans Memorial Park Beach, city officials announced a $69,400 project back in 2025 to make the beach area usable again. This initiative comes after several closures in previous years. Parks and Recreation Director Rob Spinazzola shared that the state’s Department of Environment, Great Lakes and Energy has ordered a survey to establish a regular high-water line. This step is crucial because once that line is set, the city can reclaim and develop the land behind it without needing state permission.
What’s on the agenda? The work will include restoring the grassy area above the existing seawall, constructing a new seawall, building steps or ramps from the grassy area down to the beach, and leveling and adding sand to the beach area. It’s a promising plan to bring this beloved spot back to life! However, it’s still unclear whether these steps have already been initiated. Fingers crossed for some positive changes!
As we head into this holiday weekend, it’s essential to stay informed about beach conditions. Enjoying the sun, sand, and surf should be a fantastic experience, but safety comes first. So grab your sunscreen, pack some snacks, and get ready for a day of fun in the sun!
