This year, the City of SeaTac is taking a significant step back from its usual 4th of July celebrations by canceling the formal festivities at Angle Lake Park for 2025 and 2026. The decision to pause the summer highlight stems from ongoing safety concerns and aims to promote a safer, more inclusive, and accessible experience for all community members. Following two Public Safety and Justice Committee meetings, officials decided that the large-scale programming in the past did not meet these goals.

Last year, the event saw around 10,000 attendees, but it also faced significant challenges. Issues such as drones crashing into the lake prompted concerns about crowd management and overall safety during the event, especially given that only ten police officers were on duty to handle the crowd. As such, the city announced that there will be no evening fireworks or formal programming at the park this July 4, as detailed by SeaTac Blog and reiterated by Fox 13 Seattle. However, Angle Lake Park will remain open from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. for family-friendly daytime activities, including swimming, picnicking, and the use of the spray park.

While SeaTac’s celebration might be paused, residents are encouraged to remain festive by exploring alternative events in neighboring cities. For instance, the Red, White & Blues Festival in Federal Way will kick off at 4 p.m., culminating in fireworks at 10:15 p.m. Moreover, noted Fox 13, a private club will host a fireworks display at the southern end of Angle Lake, ensuring that those who cherish the tradition of fireworks will still have an option to enjoy them safely.

Staying Safe this 4th of July

With safety at the forefront of this year’s celebrations, it’s crucial that families take extra precautions, especially around water and fireworks. The American Red Cross provides vital tips to ensure a safe holiday. For those considering using fireworks at home, they advise attending public displays instead. If fireworks are used, it’s important to keep safety practices in mind. Always follow the instructions on the package, avoid giving fireworks to children, and store them safely away from kids and pets. The individual lighting fireworks should wear protective eye gear and never aim them at people or flammable materials.

Water safety is another critical area, particularly during summer celebrations. Everyone should know how to swim and be aware of emergency protocols. The Red Cross emphasizes the necessity of designating a „water watcher“ when children are present, and to check the water first if a child goes missing, as drowning can happen swiftly and silently. If you need assistance in an emergency, always call 911 and do not put yourself at risk by entering the water, as outlined on the Red Cross’s helpful 4th of July safety guide.

This year offers a chance to rethink how we engage with our community during the holiday. While the absence of traditional fireworks may seem disappointing to some, it emphasizes a shared responsibility for safety and inclusivity. Let’s take this opportunity to celebrate responsibly and to create new traditions that consider the well-being of all community members.
