When it comes to shark attacks, Florida is at the forefront, holding the grim title of leading the world in these incidents. A recent study conducted by CBS 12 examined shark bite data stretching back to 1642 and uncovered some startling facts. Notably, three beaches in Palm Beach County—Palm Beach, Jupiter Beach Park, and Riviera Beach—have made it to the top ten beaches in the U.S. for shark attacks.

The report reveals that Florida beaches occupy nine out of the top ten spots nationwide, with New Smyrna Beach leading the pack at a staggering 277 shark attacks recorded over the centuries. Daytona Beach and Cocoa Beach follow with 67 and 39 attacks, respectively. It’s a shocking reality that has many beachgoers thinking twice before taking a dip.

Recent Incidents and Precautions

Adding to this unsettling trend, a recent incident near Jupiter saw a man requiring 40 stitches after a shark bite in July. With 14 shark bite incidents recorded in Florida in 2024 alone, which accounted for half of all cases in the U.S. and nearly 30% of unprovoked bites worldwide, caution is increasingly emphasized by local authorities.

Dr. Borrego, a marine expert, echoes this sentiment by advising beachgoers to steer clear of sharks. Swimming near lifeguards and avoiding water during dawn and dusk—when sharks tend to be most active—are vital tips for enjoying the beach safely. Ryan Blundell, founder of Tideschart, reinforces the need to stay informed about local marine conditions and essential safety guidelines, advising swimmers to stay in groups and remain close to shore, especially in murky waters.

Florida’s Shark Attack Rankings

The current ranking of U.S. beaches with the most shark attacks from 1642 through 2024 is as follows:

Beach Shark Attacks

Daytona Beach, FL 67
Cocoa Beach, FL 39
Myrtle Beach, SC 36
Palm Beach, FL 35
Indialantic Boardwalk, FL 30
Fort Pierce Inlet, FL 24
Jupiter Beach Park, FL 23
