Palm Beach Celebrates 25 Years of High School Baseball Legends!

Palm Beach Gardens, Florida, USA - The summer of 2025 marks a celebratory milestone for high school baseball enthusiasts in Palm Beach County as the community pays tribute to 25 years of excellence in the sport. Best known for its “Summer Celebration” series, the Palm Beach Post kicked off this event with a deep dive into the achievements of past Player of the Year award winners and state championship teams. This vibrant history showcases not just the skill on the field but the inspiring stories behind these young athletes.

Among the shining examples of success is the 2001 King’s Academy team, which clinched the Class 2A state championship with a remarkable record of 30-4 under the watchful eye of Coach Wayne Sewell. Star pitcher Gator Brooks delivered an unforgettable performance, boasting a phenomenal 15-1 record and an ERA of 0.83, punctuated by 110 strikeouts. Brooks’ notable one-hitter in the state semifinals set the stage for a thrilling final match where Aaron Verrett drove in the game-winning run against Gainesville-P.K. Yonge.

Celebrating Excellence in Baseball

The USA Today emphasizes that this year’s summer celebration particularly highlights remarkable teams from the past quarter-century, beginning with baseball. The series will run from June 1st to 6th, featuring not just the champions but also the up-and-coming stars who have left a mark on the field. Other noteworthy teams include the 2004 Summit Christian squad and the 2011 West Boca Raton champions, both exemplifying the passion and talent of Palm Beach youth baseball.

Colby Coates, a 2003 Player of the Year from Wellington, showcased tremendous talent as a first baseman with an impressive .487 batting average, along with 36 RBIs and 6 home runs. His journey of resilience, overcoming shoulder surgery and hamstring issues, makes his story particularly compelling. Likewise, D.J. Leonard’s 2006 campaign highlighted his abilities, where he set a school record with 13 home runs before a spinal injury sidelined him. Leonard’s story of determination continued as he resumed play at Palm Beach Community College and later at Bethune-Cookman.
