Today is the 31st of March, 2026, and a significant change is on the horizon for Palm Beach County. Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has signed a law renaming Palm Beach International Airport to “President Donald J. Trump International Airport”. This legislation was officially signed on March 30, shortly after being presented to DeSantis, although no public signing ceremony was held. This move seems aimed at strengthening ties with former President Trump.
The passage of the law was not without controversy. It received bipartisan support in the Florida legislature, with the House approving it 81-30 and the Senate 25-11, primarily along party lines. However, House Minority Leader Fentrice Driskell criticized the law as a misallocation of priorities and a waste of taxpayer money. On the other hand, Senator Debbie Mayfield, who sponsored the bill in the Senate, argued that Trump deserved this honor for his actions against illegal immigration and drug trafficking.
Details of the Renaming Process
As part of the renaming process, a formal request must be submitted to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) for the change to be officially recognized. The FAA will handle the updates in flight charting and navigation databases, as well as modify airport signage accordingly. Interestingly, legislation has also been introduced by Rep. Brian Mast to change the airport’s three-letter code from PBI to DJT.
In addition to the airport, separate bills are set to honor Trump further, naming Commercial Boulevard in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea as “President Donald J. Trump Boulevard” and State Road 80 as “President Donald J. Trump Highway”. The law will take effect on July 1 and will prevent the renaming of several other airports in Florida.
Eric Trump expressed his gratitude through social media, thanking DeSantis and others involved in the legislation. The financial aspect of this name change is noteworthy as well; the Senate’s budget proposal allocates $2.75 million for the renaming costs, half of the initially requested $5.5 million.
Trump’s Impact on Florida
This airport renaming follows the recent approval of a plan to donate property for Trump’s presidential library in Miami, further solidifying his connection to the state. Since moving to Florida in 2019, Trump’s primary residence has been at Mar-a-Lago in West Palm Beach, making this renaming particularly relevant.
In a broader context, Donald Trump’s legacy continues to influence American culture and politics. His signature will appear on all future U.S. paper currency, marking the first time a sitting president’s signature will grace American money. This summer, his name will also be associated with a new class of Navy warships, and he has recently been recognized at various institutions, such as the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts.
