Daytona Beach Shores, Florida, USA - The South Shore Motel in Daytona Beach Shores is taking steps toward recovery after suffering significant damage from Tropical Storms Ian and Nicole in 2022. The motel had been closed since then, but Hotel Motel Inc. has purchased the property for $3 million and aims to invest an additional $1 million for renovations. According to the News-Journal Online, the overhaul includes structural updates such as backfill under the tower, grading and landscaping, and the addition of new steps leading to the beach. Both the interior and exterior will see significant enhancements, with a goal of reopening by early 2026. This project is expected to last approximately four months.

The previous owner, Halifax Investment Services, abandoned its renovation plans, overwhelmed by the difficulties posed by the storms. As neighboring properties, including the Daytona Shores Inn & Suites, work on their repairs, some ongoing challenges are evident. Areas still awaiting restoration show the lingering effects of the devastating storms that struck the region.

The Toll of Hurricane Damage

Speaking of devastation, the impact of Hurricane Nicole and Ian is staggering. In Volusia County alone, damage from Hurricane Nicole is estimated at over $522 million, far surpassing the $377 million from Hurricane Ian. The latter was a catastrophic category 4 storm that made landfall in late September, resulting in 137 deaths and severe beach erosion. This erosion rendered homes susceptible to further damage when Hurricane Nicole struck. The Associated Press reported that Daytona Beach Shores was hit hardest in Volusia County, experiencing $370.3 million in property damage.

Furthermore, the effects of these storms were palpable in nearby communities. In Wilbur-by-the-Sea, 29 single-family homes were damaged, with 17 classified as unsafe. Similar reports from Ponce Inlet and New Smyrna Beach highlighted the vulnerability of multiple structures.
