Today is July 1, 2026, and there’s some exciting news buzzing around Port St. Lucie that locals won’t want to miss! The city is stepping up with a major initiative to enhance Midway Road and bring a new interchange to Florida’s Turnpike. With a whopping $95 million earmarked for this endeavor, it’s clear that things are getting serious about improving our local infrastructure!

The project will expand a 1½-mile stretch of Midway Road from two lanes to four. Talk about a breath of fresh air for our traffic woes! But that’s not all—there’s going to be a partial turnpike interchange, along with new bike lanes, trails, and sidewalks. It’s like the city is rolling out the welcome mat, not just for cars but for everyone—pedestrians and cyclists included!

What’s on the Horizon

Design work is expected to wrap up by fall 2023, with construction slated to kick off in summer 2027. If all goes according to plan, we could see project completion by March 2030. That’s a bit of a wait, but it’ll be worth it in the end! The Midway Road expansion will connect to existing four-lane sections in Fort Pierce and Port St. Lucie, making travel smoother for everyone.

On June 22, the City Council made a unanimous decision to donate about 7 acres of land off Midway Road to the Florida Department of Transportation (FDOT). In return, the FDOT will handle drainage work and make enhancements that will serve as a gateway into the city. It’s a give-and-take that seems to benefit everyone involved!

But hold on—before we get too excited, there’s one more vote needed to finalize the land donation. Fingers crossed that it goes through without a hitch!

More Than Just Roads

The project is part of a larger effort under the Moving Florida Forward Infrastructure Initiative, which has received a substantial $4 billion funding boost from the Florida Legislature in 2024. This initiative isn’t just about making our roads wider; it’s tackling traffic congestion, safety, and the overall resiliency of our transportation network. With Florida’s population projected to grow by about 1,000 people every day over the next 30 years, these improvements are vital.

As part of the project, the existing bridge over Florida’s Turnpike will be replaced. A 12-foot bicycle/pedestrian path will be added on the south side, along with a 6-foot sidewalk on the north. This means more safety and accessibility for those who prefer two wheels or just their own two feet. What a great way to encourage a healthier lifestyle!

As we look forward to these exciting developments, it’s clear that Port St. Lucie is on the path to becoming an even more vibrant and accessible community. Stay tuned for more updates as this project unfolds! For a deeper dive into this story, check out the full article on TCPalm.
