Historic Mount Bethel Church in Daytona Beach Marks 140 Years of Faith

700 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Daytona Beach, Florida, USA - On June 22, 2025, a remarkable milestone will unfold in Daytona Beach as the Mount Bethel Baptist Institutional Church prepares to celebrate its 140th anniversary. Established in 1885, this church holds a significant place in the heart of the community as the first church built specifically for Black residents in the area. Located at 700 S. Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, Mount Bethel has a rich history that continues to resonate with local residents.
The anniversary event kicks off at 10:30 a.m. with a worship service featuring Rev. L. Ronald Durham as the guest speaker. Attendees will be treated to a nostalgic theme of „we’ve come this far by faith,“ and a „light menu“ will add to the celebratory atmosphere. It’s an occasion that promises to reflect on the journey of faith and community over the decades.
A Glimpse into History
Mount Bethel’s inception was spearheaded by Joseph Brook Hankerson, who not only became the first pastor but also made history as Daytona’s first Black city commissioner in 1898. The church began its spiritual mission on Fremont Avenue in the Silver Hill neighborhood before moving to Church Street a few years later, and ultimately settling into its current home built in 1921, which showcases beautiful Late Gothic Revival architecture.
The congregation has always been vibrant, traditionally hosting one of the largest Black communities in Daytona. Noteworthy members like theologian Howard Thurman and Yvonne Scarlett-Golden, the city’s first Black mayor, further highlight the church’s influential role in Daytona Beach’s history.
Challenges and Resilience
As the congregation moves forward, they are actively seeking to raise funds for ongoing maintenance and insurance, ensuring that this historic place of worship remains a beacon of hope and community support in Daytona Beach. The church’s commitment to social responsibility continues through initiatives aimed at addressing hunger in Volusia County, collaborating with local partners like the United Brethren in Christ Church in Holly Hill.
