Are you ready for a magical experience on the water? This summer, the enchanting Mosquito Lagoon in Oak Hill, Florida, offers an unforgettable opportunity to explore bioluminescence on a guided night paddle tour. Hosted by the Volusia County Explore Volusia Program and led by environmental specialist Tommy Nordmann, this adventure is not to be missed!
Participants need to arrive 30 minutes ahead of time to sort out waivers and organize equipment. Speaking of which, you’ll need to bring your own watercraft—whether it’s a kayak, canoe, or stand-up paddleboard (SUP)—plus a paddle and personal flotation device. Don’t forget essentials like a flashlight, drinking water, and insect repellent! And if you’re planning to rent, there are five sit-on-top kayaks available for free, but you’ll need to reserve them in advance in the “Add-ons” section of your ticket purchase.
What to Expect
This isn’t just any ordinary paddle; it’s a light show! As you glide through the lagoon at dusk, billions of dinoflagellates will light up the water with a stunning blueish-white glow whenever you disturb them. It’s like nature’s fireworks! The glow can be especially bright from July to August, making it prime time for this experience. Just imagine paddling along, creating light effects with each stroke, and maybe even encountering a school of mullets that leap out of the water, adding to the spectacle.
Now, if you’re thinking of snapping some photos, be warned—it’s a bit tricky due to the low light conditions. However, the experience itself is what you’ll remember most. Safety is key, so life preservers, whistles, and glow sticks are provided, and you’ll want to stay close to your tour leader for tips and information along the way.
Dress smart for the occasion! Lightweight clothing is recommended to keep you cool, but it’s also wise to wear long sleeves and pants to fend off those pesky insects. Quick-drying clothes and water shoes will serve you well, especially since getting wet is all part of the fun! And remember, the bioluminescence phenomenon tends to be best on darker nights, so checking the moon calendar before you go is a good idea.
Planning Your Adventure
To join in on this magical experience, you’ll want to snag your tickets soon—reservations are required and can be made through Eventbrite. The ticket prices vary: it’s $60 for adults, $50 if you bring your own kayak, and $75 for those opting for clear kayaks. No printed tickets are necessary; just keep an eye out for your confirmation email! Children ages 10 and up are welcome but must be accompanied by an adult.
And if you can’t make it to this tour, don’t fret! Other outfitters like BK Adventure and Adventures in Florida also offer similar bioluminescence kayaking experiences throughout the summer months, with prices ranging from $50 to $80. So, whether you’re a seasoned paddler or a newbie, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this stunning natural wonder.
