93 Dunlawton Ave, Port Orange, FL, 32127, USA - Exciting times are ahead for boating enthusiasts and nature lovers in Port Orange! The beloved Causeway Park, which has offered enjoyment to the local community for nearly 30 years, is gearing up for some significant renovations. According to News-Journal, the city is set to revamp the area, which includes a complete overhaul of the 30-year-old boat ramp. This extensive project not only aims to improve access for boaters but also enhances safety features and modernizes the existing facilities.

The improvements will take place under the Dunlawton Bridge at 93 Dunlawton Ave, where the park occupies a sprawling 30 acres. The City Council awarded a construction contract to East Coast Marine Construction & Design on June 3, setting the stage for a transformation that is anticipated to cost $1.65 million. Thanks to funding from the Florida Inland Navigation and Volusia ECHO grants, around $1.2 million has been secured, with the city stepping in to cover the remainder.

What’s on the Docket?

The renovations are comprehensive. Besides the boat ramp replacement, the project will include the removal of various structures, such as timber access docks and aluminum gangways. The existing concrete ramp will be repaved to stand up better against the elements—tidal and tropical weather will pose fewer challenges to larger boats and trailers with the new improvements.

New features will also enhance user experience. These include three fixed and reinforced concrete access docks along with a timber access dock, and the installation of four concrete floating dock systems. Not to be overlooked, the new gangways will be approximately 30 feet long, allowing boaters better access regardless of water depth.

The parking lot isn’t being left out, either. Plans include milling and paving existing asphalt to create 22 parking spots with added bumper guards and two new ADA-approved spaces. An environmental information kiosk will also be added, enhancing the educational experience for visitors.

Looking Ahead

While the renovations are promising, there’s still a bit of a wait. Construction is expected to take about a year to complete once it begins. However, the start date remains uncertain due to supply chain issues, particularly related to tariffs affecting construction materials. The contractor anticipates needing four to six months just to procure the necessary supplies. Nevertheless, the enhancements to the South Causeway Boat Ramp Park are eagerly awaited.

Port Orange Connection shares that the city council has also approved a grant application through the Florida Inland Navigation District (FIND). This grant aims to further enhance the docks, including adding improvements to ramp slope and replacing existing wood docks with resilient floating systems, making it easier for boaters to access the water.

The importance of these upgrades cannot be overlooked. The Boating Infrastructure Grant Program has been instrumental in providing funding to enhance docking and comfort facilities for larger boats. This program strengthens ties between local communities and transient boaters, promoting economic benefits that come from recreational boating. With over 675,000 large cruising boats in the U.S., our waterfronts can thrive with the right infrastructure in place, as highlighted in the information from the FWS.

In summary, the future of Causeway Park looks brighter than ever. With a blend of historical charm and modern enhancements, this beloved park will continue to be a vital recreational hub for our community for years to come.
