Alachua Unveils New Water Facility Boosting Capacity and Sustainability!

Recently, Alachua officially unveiled its new water management facility, marking a significant step forward in enhancing the city’s water reliability and capacity. The ceremony took place on Wednesday, with city staff, commissioners, and workers from the water quality and resiliency improvement project all in attendance. Interim City Manager Rodolfo Valladares, alongside other officials, reflected on the nearly decade-long journey that led to this moment. The project’s inception can be traced back to the fallout from water contaminations and service outages caused by Hurricane Irma in 2017. The city commission approved a budget of $485,000 for the project in 2021, with funding sources including $375,000 from grants provided by the Florida House of Representatives and the Department of Environmental Protection.

The facility, constructed by Jacobs Engineering and Walker Architects, is designed not only for efficiency but also for environmental sustainability. It does a good deal to reduce the total water extracted from the aquifer by simply shifting the withdrawal point, achieving a healthier balance with nature. Furthermore, the Suwannee River Water Management District has set a requisition for the city to replenish every gallon taken from the aquifer; currently, about 80% of the water is being returned.

One of the standout features of this new facility is Florida’s first chlorination contact tank, which utilizes computer-based flow dynamics for disinfection. This technology improves the effectiveness of the water treatment process, ensuring that the supply remains safe for residents. In practical terms, the additional capacity will be able to supply around 3,600 more people, allowing for growth and development in the area.
