In an impressive display of skill and determination, the Florida women’s golf team, currently ranked No. 7, has kicked off the Gators Invitational in style. With a record-low round of 271 (-9), the team has set a new benchmark in program history, surpassing the previous record of 273 established at the Cougar Classic. This stellar performance has granted Florida a four-shot lead over Virginia as they head into the second round scheduled for tomorrow at 8:30 a.m.
The Gators made quite the start, coming out of the gate strong with an incredible 9-under through the first five holes. Four of their five team golfers managed to finish under par during the front nine, showcasing their collective talent and teamwork. Sophomore Siuue Wu led the charge, shooting a remarkable career-low 65 (-5), placing her at the top of the leaderboard after the first 18 holes. Wu’s performance ties her for the second-lowest round in program history, a feat last achieved by Maisie Filler during the same tournament last year.
Team Highlights and Individual Performances
Alongside Wu, freshman Katelyn Huber put forth a commendable effort, finishing with a score of 67 (-3) and securing a tie for second place. Huber’s round was particularly impressive as she boasted a bogey-free front nine and made three consecutive birdies. Rounding out the top performances for Florida, Paula Francisco delivered a solid score of 68 (-2), placing her in a tie for fourth.
Despite some challenges on the back nine, where the team faced eight bogeys and a double bogey from Megan Propeck on Hole 13, Propeck displayed resilience by bouncing back with three consecutive birdies on holes 14-16. For individual competitors, Elaine Widjaja led the way among the individuals with a score of 69 (-1), tying for seventh, while Inès Archer and Sophie Stevens finished with scores of 73 and 76, respectively.
Looking at the overall team scores, Florida’s 271 (-9) puts them ahead of Virginia (-5) and North Carolina (+2), who are trailing by seven strokes. The Gators have historically dominated this tournament, having won the Gators Invitational 27 times in their program’s history and nine of the last ten seasons. Last year, they celebrated a double victory by clinching both team and individual titles for the first time since 2021.
As the tournament progresses, all eyes will be on the Gators as they strive to maintain their lead and continue their winning tradition. With a strong lineup and impressive individual performances, the team is poised for another successful outing. Fans can look forward to watching them return to action Saturday morning at 8:30 a.m. For more details about the tournament, visit the official Florida Gators page.
