Today is March 9, 2026, and we’re thrilled to highlight the remarkable achievements of young athletes in our local community. This week, Leila Goll von Bolles has been named the Florida Times-Union Girls Athlete of the Week for the period of February 23 to 28, 2026. Goll’s outstanding performance in her last home game saw her score a career-high of 20 points, playing a crucial role in the Bulldogs’ victory over Newberry in the FHSAA Region 1-3A girls basketball championship.

Leila’s triumph is not just a personal win; it reflects the vibrant spirit of high school sports in Northeast Florida. She emerged victoriously from a competitive poll that included other talented athletes such as Cora Anderson from Episcopal Tennis, Miranda Campos from Bartram Trail Basketball, and Nijah Garnes from Jackson Track, to name a few. The voting process for the next Girls Athlete of the Week opens on Monday morning and concludes on Thursday at 10 AM, with nominations accepted until Saturday at 7 PM. Coaches are encouraged to submit stats and results to preps@jacksonville.com. Remember, voting is limited to once per device per hour!

It’s inspiring to see young athletes like Leila Goll von Bolles excel in their sports, especially during a time when physical activity is increasingly vital for youth well-being. Studies have shown that about 80% of adolescents do not meet the World Health Organization’s recommendation of 60 minutes of physical activity per day. The ongoing impact of the COVID-19 pandemic has made organized sports more challenging, making the achievements of student-athletes even more commendable.

The Importance of Youth Sports

Engaging in sports not only fosters physical health but also contributes to social and emotional development. The German Children’s and Youth Sports Report emphasizes the importance of physical activity for healthy growth. Initiatives like the EU’s icoachkids and various research projects underline the commitment to enhancing youth sports across the globe. With 90% of children participating in sports beyond school programs, it’s clear that activities like soccer and swimming are popular and beneficial.

For those interested in diving deeper into research on youth sports, the BISp offers a comprehensive sports information portal that showcases over 285,000 datasets, providing insights into health, performance, and societal impacts surrounding children’s sports. This resource is invaluable for those looking to understand the trends and statistics within youth athletics.

As we celebrate Leila Goll von Bolles and her peers, let’s continue to support and encourage our young athletes to stay active and engaged in their sports. Their hard work and determination pave the way for a healthier, more vibrant community.
