It’s a big day here in Starke, Florida! On July 12, 2026, the Camp Blanding Joint Training Center played host to the much-anticipated 2026 Best Warrior Competition. Soldiers from all over are gathering to put their skills to the test in a series of demanding challenges designed to evaluate their capabilities in essential warrior tasks. The air is thick with anticipation as competitors prepare to tackle land navigation while also working toward their Expert Infantry Badge (EIB).
The land navigation event features a modified resection exercise aimed at honing the soldiers’ skills in determining their location using a map, compass, and terrain association. It’s not just about finding your way around—this competition serves to reinforce tactical abilities essential for operating in complex environments. You can feel the excitement buzzing as these warriors gear up for what’s sure to be an intense day. One of the highlights? A fantastic photo opportunity captured by Staff Sgt. Shannon Durango, showcasing the grit and determination of these dedicated individuals (check out the image here).
Challenges in Competition
Just to give you a sense of what these brave souls are up against, let’s take a look back at the Region VII Best Warrior Competition held in 2025 at Camp Navajo, Arizona. U.S. Army Sgt. Christopher Petersen and Spc. Vu Nguyen were among the competitors, representing Hawaii’s Army National Guard. They faced a grueling three-day event filled with endurance tests, land navigation, and weapons qualification—all designed to showcase adaptability, resilience, and precision. Talk about pressure!
The first day was packed with Expert Soldier Badge events and endurance challenges that really pushed the limits. The second day? An 18-mile ruck march, react to contact scenarios, and more land navigation challenges. And the final day culminated in weapons qualification events. It was all about crowning the Soldier of the Year and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year for the region! Competitors came from a diverse array of states, including Arizona, California, and Utah, making it a true melting pot of military talent. You can read more about their experiences here.
The Importance of Skill Mastery
Now, why do events like this matter so much? Well, for one, they provide soldiers with the chance to demonstrate their skills in a competitive setting, which is invaluable for career advancement. The Expert Infantry Badge, established back in 1943 during World War II, recognizes outstanding infantrymen, while the newer Expert Soldier Badge gives non-infantry soldiers the opportunity to shine. It’s a big deal! Master Sgt. Tim Brogan has emphasized that maintaining proficiency in the skills learned during basic training is crucial for success in these courses. And let’s be honest, those skills can get a bit rusty if you don’t practice regularly.
It’s all about growth and development. Soldiers get to train alongside one another, sharing knowledge about various weapons systems, which is just plain awesome. 1st Lt. Andrew Carrosino encourages everyone, regardless of their background, to get involved in these events for personal growth and skill enhancement. After all, who wouldn’t want to show off their skills?
As the sun sets on this year’s Best Warrior Competition, we can only imagine the stories that will come out of it. From navigating through dense foliage to strategizing in high-pressure scenarios, this event is more than just a competition—it’s a testament to the hard work, dedication, and resilience of our armed forces. We can’t wait to see who will emerge victorious!
