If you’re looking for a mix of history, nature, and community, you’re in for a treat. The Monmouth County Park System has lined up an impressive array of events, all for free or at a nominal cost!

From May 13-17, 2026, you can enjoy free tours at various historic sites within the park system. Each site has its own schedule, so be sure to check in by calling 732-842-4000, ext. 4312 to find out what’s happening where. This is a fantastic opportunity to learn about the rich history right in our backyard!

Exciting Activities Ahead

Mark your calendars for May 16, 2026, because there are several fun events happening that day! At Deep Cut Gardens in Middletown, the Native Plant Exchange kicks off at 8:30 a.m. Bring along your established native plants in the correct container sizes to swap with others! It’s a great way to get some new greenery while supporting local biodiversity.

If you’re into puzzles, you won’t want to miss the Jigsaw Puzzle Swap at the Thompson Park Theater Barn in Lincroft, from 10-11 a.m. Bring your old puzzles and trade them for new ones—who knows what treasures you might find!

Later in the day, head over to Historic Longstreet Farm in Holmdel for a Cookstove Demonstration from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. This event will give you a glimpse into the culinary practices of the past. And if you’re a fan of music, don’t miss the Accordion Melodies of the 1890s from 1-3 p.m.!

For those who love a bit of action, the Open Shoot Archery takes place at the Thompson Park Activity Barn from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., though it’s important to note that this is not for beginners and costs $10 per person. If you’re looking for something more relaxed, how about a visit to the Mill Demonstration at Historic Walnford? They’ll have demos on both May 16 and 17, starting at 12:30 p.m. every hour until 3:30 p.m. It’s a free event, perfect for families!

As we move into the following week, don’t forget about the Casual Birder event on May 19 at the Manasquan Reservoir Visitor Center, Howell, at 9 a.m. This is another free event that invites you to connect with nature and learn about local bird species.

Also, from May 20-25, 2026, the Park System will offer free tours again! Be sure to call ahead for details. And on May 20, don’t miss the Nature Lecture on Horseshoe Crabs at Bayshore Waterfront Park Activity Center, Port Monmouth, from 7-8 p.m. It’s a fascinating topic that’s sure to pique your interest!

For those who enjoy swimming, the Fort Monmouth Recreation Center will have Open Swim from May 23-25, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. You can buy daily or seasonal swim passes to enjoy some cool fun. Plus, canoe rentals will be available at Thompson Park on May 23 and 24 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at a fee of $15 per boat for a two-hour rental. Sounds like a perfect way to spend a sunny day!

If you’re thinking of visiting the Newlin Grist Mill, be aware that their visitor center is currently closed due to renovations aimed at elevating the historic building out of the flood zone. However, they have set up a Welcome Center in the archival building next door, which is open Tuesday to Sunday from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. You can find more information, pay for tours, and explore a limited selection in their gift shop there. Just a heads up: parking is limited in the front lot, but additional spaces are available in the back lot. Thanks for your patience during the renovations!
