The unofficial start of summer was celebrated with the spirited Boater Skip Day on June 7, 2025, at Mile Marker 24 on the St. Johns River. This popular event drew nearly 1,000 boaters who braved the day’s unpredictable weather, featuring a few spotty showers and thunderstorms in the area. Known for its relaxed atmosphere, this year’s festivities were markedly safer, as only eight arrests were made, a sharp decline from the 21 arrests reported the previous year. News 4 JAX highlights that these arrests included incidents of boating under the influence and one case involving battery against a law enforcement officer.

Attendance numbers were impressive, drawing thousands to the scenic waters of the St. Johns River, and law enforcement agencies, led by the Clay County Sheriff’s Office along with Florida Fish and Wildlife, increased their presence to ensure safety. Reassuringly, Sheriff Michelle Cook reported only two medical calls requiring assistance from the various emergency services present, which also included responders from Green Cove Springs and other neighboring counties. All of this contributed to a well-managed and relatively incident-free event.Clay Today painted a vivid picture of a day filled with camaraderie, laughter, and the joys of summer on the water.

Safety is Key

Tyler Barrus, a lead instructor at the Freedom Boat Club, took the opportunity to stress the importance of safety on the water. He reminded boaters not only to avoid drinking and driving but also to wear life vests—a sentiment echoed by many in the boating community. The risks associated with recreational boating are well-documented, as the U.S. Coast Guard regularly tracks statistics on boating safety incidents across the nation. Their findings serve as a crucial reminder of the potential dangers that can arise when safety protocols are overlooked.

Throughout the day, the St. Johns County Air Unit added an extra layer of oversight, sharing aerial footage via social media to keep both participants and shore-side spectators informed about the operational efforts of law enforcement. This showcase of technology not only enhanced public awareness but also served to deter would-be troublemakers.

Despite the challenges posed by the weather, the sense of community among participants shined through. Following the heightened excitement of the Boater Skip Day, many attendees left with smiles, creating lasting memories while fostering a spirit of responsibility on the water. In summary, this year’s event proved to be a delightful celebration that balanced fun with a strong emphasis on safety, ensuring that all left in good spirits and with stories to tell for years to come.
