Billy Joel's Motorcycle Shop to Close: Final Days for 20th Century Cycles
In a surprising turn of events, legendary musician Billy Joel is closing his motorcycle shop, 20th Century Cycles, located at 101 Audrey Ave. in Oyster Bay, Long Island. This beloved establishment, which opened its doors in November 2010, has served as a showcase for Joel’s impressive collection of over 75 vintage motorcycles. But as the lease nears its end in September, Joel has decided not to renew it, marking the end of an era for this unique destination in the neighborhood.
As reported, Joel plans to auction off his motorcycle collection later this year due to a recent medical issue. He was diagnosed with normal pressure hydrocephalus, which has been affecting his balance, hearing, and vision. Currently, he is undergoing physical therapy, which has also led to the cancellation of his remaining concert tour dates. The shop is still open for business on weekends throughout August, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., offering various motorcycle parts for sale. Shoppers can find both new and used parts from respected brands like BMW, Harley Davidson, Royal Enfield, and more, though purchases are cash only.
Farewell to a Local Landmark
20th Century Cycles has been a cherished spot for motorcycle enthusiasts and fans of the Piano Man alike. Initially, Joel opened the shop to share his love for motorcycle design and showcase his cherished classic bikes, including a stunning array of cruisers, bobbers, and sidecars that were free for public viewing without any admission charges. Following the announcement of its closure, many local fans have expressed their sorrow over losing a place that beautifully embodies the spirit of one of Long Island’s most iconic figures.
The renaming of part of the street to “Billy Joel Way” back in 2023, speaks volumes about the impact of both the musician and his shop in the Oyster Bay community. As Joel prepares to part ways with this piece of his legacy, he has also put his Centre Island mansion on the market for $29.9 million. However, he’ll still maintain his residence in Sag Harbor, which remains a fixture in his life.
Looking Ahead
Though it may feel like the end of a chapter, Joel’s journey continues, especially as he begins to divide his time between Florida and Long Island. With his daughter’s insistence on his continued involvement in her life, including her recent milestone of turning 10, he aims to strike a balance between his family life and ongoing passions.
Fans, too, will have the chance to own a piece of motorcycle history with the upcoming auction of Joel’s personal collection planned later this year. As Billy Joel prepares to close the doors on 20th Century Cycles, he leaves behind not just a shop, but a legacy dedicated to the freedom of the open road and the community that embraced it.
