Quincy, Florida, USA - In a significant step for community safety, St. Paul’s Episcopal Church in Quincy, Florida, has officially been certified as a new emergency shelter by the American Red Cross. This recognition comes after a rigorous process that concluded with a successful site inspection last month. Located conveniently off West King Street near Interstate 10, St. Paul’s will serve as a vital resource for those in need during emergencies, particularly given its proximity to the Florida Hurricane Evacuation Route.

This certification was not simply a last-minute effort; it was a goal set during a planning retreat for 2024, aimed at enhancing the church’s engagement with the local community. The church boasts various facilities, including multiple bathrooms and a small kitchenette, with the possibility of further enhancements like showers or laundry facilities in the future. This commitment to community service reflects St. Paul’s dedication to support its neighbors, especially in times of crisis.

Volunteer Opportunities Abound

The Red Cross highlights personal stories from volunteers like Ben Emesowum and Alexiana Bernard, who actively contribute to the Disaster Action Team (DAT) in Maryland. Their experiences demonstrate the rewarding nature of volunteering, from assisting families affected by disasters to receiving specialized training that enhances their ability to provide support.

Alexiana, for example, originally joined to fulfill a requirement for her nursing program but has since dedicated approximately 12 hours a month to volunteer work. She appreciates the flexibility of her role and the support she receives from her Disaster Program Manager, making her journey fulfilling and impactful.

Join the Movement

As St. Paul’s prepares to welcome its first visitors as a newly certified shelter, the Red Cross is set to hold a volunteer training session at the church’s parish hall on August 16 at 9:00 a.m. This is a perfect opportunity for those looking to get involved directly in their community and make a real difference.
