2541 Gulf Breeze Parkway, Gulf Breeze, FL, USA - Exciting news is brewing in Gulf Breeze as Alga Beer Co. is set to open its new biergarten, The Breeze Way, this weekend. Located inside the Truxtop Food Court at 2541 Gulf Breeze Parkway, this fresh venue aims to provide a delightful space for craft beer lovers to unwind.

As reported by PNJ, The Breeze Way will kick off operations on June 14, serving a range of Alga’s popular beers, as well as wine and cider, beginning bright and early at 11 a.m. This new spot marks Alga’s first foray into Santa Rosa County, following the successful launch of their flagship location in East Hill.

A Growing Craft Beer Scene

Alga Beer Co., co-founded by John Hodgdon II, Brett Reid, and Thomas Grier, opened its doors in Pensacola in August 2021, with a vision that began as a college home brewing hobby nearly a decade ago. The brewery at 2435 N. 12th Ave. has become a local favorite, with a spacious 5,500-square-foot taproom designed for a laid-back atmosphere. With rustic wood tables and a hand-poured concrete bar top, it’s a cozy spot for friends to enjoy their time together.

The flagship location features a variety of house-brewed beers, including crowd-pleasers like East Hillsner, Wheatwave, and the delightful El Sure. Further enhancing their lineup, Alga introduced The Florida Room in 2024, a cocktail lounge specializing in innovative seltzer-based cocktails and slushies.

The Breeze Way expands this burgeoning craft beer experience. Featuring food trucks such as Ghost Fried Chicken and Greek Catering & Events, beer aficionados are encouraged to enjoy complementary snacks as they savor Alga’s finest brews.

Craft Beer Challenges

While the excitement around local breweries like Alga is palpable, the craft beer industry is facing its own set of challenges, as BeverageDaily highlights. Recent reports indicate that craft beer production saw a slight decline of 1% in 2023 compared to 2022. As consumers increasingly seek new flavors and experiences, the competition has intensified with the rise of ready-to-drink alcohol products.

In 2024, it is anticipated that the craft beer sector may continue to face difficulties, with fewer new breweries opening—a stark contrast to the vibrant craft situation seen in previous years. Breweries are adapting to these changes by tightening their product offerings and enhancing customer experiences, a strategy that Alga seems to embody well with its new biergarten and indoor food options.

  • 2019: 8,419 breweries, 4% production growth, 13.6% market share
  • 2020: 8,921 breweries, -9% production growth, 12.3% market share
  • 2021: 9,210 breweries, 8% production growth, 13.1% market share
  • 2022: 9,675 breweries, -2% production growth, 13.2% market share
  • 2023: 9,761 breweries, -1% production growth, 13.6% market share

One thing is clear: Alga Beer Co. is not just a local brewery but a budding player in this landscape, carving out its niche while contributing to the local culture.
