The Coastal Community Association (CCA) recently hosted the 12th Annual Liar’s Challenge on February 26, 2026, at the newly opened The Mill Mercantile and Social in WindMark. This lively event aimed to kick off the Gulf County Sheriff’s Easter Basket and Food Drive, supporting local charities and families in need. The atmosphere was electric, with over 75 attendees gathered to enjoy some fantastic storytelling and community spirit.

Despite the rain, which prompted a quick relocation under The Mill’s roof, the event went off without a hitch, thanks to the owner, Patrick Pugh, and the smooth hosting by Robyn Avery Rennick. The Ukes, formerly known as The Ukulele Orchestra of St. Andrews, provided delightful entertainment under the direction of Pat Nease, keeping spirits high throughout the evening.

Exciting Stories and Generous Hearts

Participants in the Liar’s Challenge shared their most captivating tales, each aiming for a chance at cash prizes for the top three stories. Contestants had just under nine minutes to weave their narratives, which could range from fantastical to unexpectedly twisty, always structured with a clear beginning, middle, and end. Nine storytellers took the stage, including Ray Merrill from Michigan, who took home first place with his thrilling account of the World Pepper Eating Contest. Allen Schemmel and Bill Aycock followed closely behind, securing second and third place with their entertaining stories about “Grandma’s Health” and “Crashing John and Carolyn Kennedy’s Wedding,” respectively.

The event raised over $1,200 for the Easter Basket and Food Drive, which aims to provide Easter baskets and stuffed animals for approximately 300 children in Gulf County. In addition to the Easter donations, any surplus will be distributed to local food banks, including Two Fish in Port St. Joe and the Ministerial Association in Wewahitchka. Donations of Easter baskets and stuffed animals can be made at various local businesses and facilities until March 27, 2026, with tax-deductible contributions welcome at the CCA’s address in Port St. Joe.

Community Engagement and Support

The Liar’s Challenge is just one of the many ways the CCA fosters community engagement and support. Fundraising events like this are crucial for nonprofit organizations, allowing them to connect with donors and secure necessary funding for their initiatives. In fact, statistics show that 85% of donors volunteer, and 81% participate in fundraising events in the U.S., highlighting the importance of such community gatherings.

Upcoming community initiatives include the Gulf County Sheriff’s Toy Drive, aiming to provide gifts for 350 children this Christmas, and a reforestation project in Salinas Park, which has been ongoing since 2023. Volunteers are actively involved in these efforts, showing that the spirit of giving and community support runs deep in Gulf County.

As we look forward to more events and initiatives, it’s clear that the heart of Gulf County beats strongest when its residents come together to support one another. For more information on the CCA and their upcoming events, check out their official page.

In conclusion, the Liar’s Challenge was a wonderful showcase of local talent and generosity, proving once again that when the community rallies together, great things can happen. Keep an eye out for more exciting events, and don’t miss the chance to be part of this thriving community!
