Today, we gather to celebrate the life of Mr. Thomas “Man” Eugene Way Sr., a beloved figure from Venice, Florida, who passed away on April 2, 2026, at the age of 69. Mr. Way’s journey through life was marked by deep family ties, warm memories, and a commitment to service. His story is one that resonates with many who knew him and those who appreciate the rich tapestry of American life.

Born and raised in Goulds, Miami-Dade, Thomas was the only boy in a family of five sisters. This unique upbringing fostered strong familial bonds, and weekends spent in his grandmother’s garden were cherished moments that shaped his early years. He often reminisced about his Bahamian and Georgian roots, recalling summers filled with tropical fruits and time spent with cousins in Georgia. Thomas’s father, an independent cement worker, played a significant role in his upbringing, taking him along to worksites, instilling a sense of hard work and determination.

A Life of Service and Love

After attending local schools, where he excelled in football and worked at Publix, Thomas’s path took him to the Army in 1975. He served for seven years, including two years stationed in Germany. It was during this time that he met Phyllis, his future wife, while working at Publix. They married in 1977 in a beautiful garden ceremony in Jacksonville, Florida. Their family grew to include two children, Thomas and Tiffany, who were born in Germany and Ft. Campbell, respectively.

Upon completing his military service, Thomas transitioned into a career with the Miami-Dade Police Department in 1982. Known affectionately as the “ticket man,” he patrolled South Dade and later became a member of the Motor Unit. His humor and storytelling about traffic tickets made him a beloved figure among his peers. However, a motorcycle accident in 1996 curtailed his law enforcement career, leading him to retire in 1998.

Later Years and Legacy

Thomas and Phyllis moved to Punta Gorda in 2015, eventually settling in Venice, Florida, where he embraced his love of gardening, music from the 1960s and 70s, and community connections. He shared memorable experiences with his family, including traveling to significant events like his grandson’s graduation in Washington State. His legacy continues through his surviving family: wife Phyllis Dailey Way, son Thomas E. Way II, daughter Tiffany Joi Way, and numerous siblings, grandchildren, in-laws, and friends.
