The Choctawhatchee Electric Cooperative (CHELCO) is making waves in the community with its announcement of six outstanding local students selected for the coveted 2026 Youth Tour program. This initiative allows young minds to embark on an unforgettable journey to Washington, D.C., where they will immerse themselves in the workings of democracy, all while connecting with peers from across the nation. According to Crestview Bulletin, the students chosen to represent their schools this summer are Kaylee Yeakos from Paxton School, Calie Brackin from Walton High School, Noah Seeliger from Collegiate High School at Northwest Florida State College, and Rose Weinacker from Niceville High School. Notably, Aidan Enriquez from Crestview High School and Graham Beauchamp from Niceville High School will serve as alternates.
This year’s selection process was no small feat. CHELCO had previously hosted the FECA Youth Tour in Tallahassee earlier in February, where 22 enthusiastic high school juniors participated in a range of activities. They engaged in mock legislative sessions, toured the State Capitol, and learned about the legislative process firsthand. The entire experience was overseen by dedicated CHELCO staff, ensuring a rich educational environment for all participants. Insights from CHELCO highlight how after the trip, students were required to submit video reflections on what they learned, contributing to the selection of the top delegates to head to D.C. in June.
Expanding Opportunities for Youth
Beyond the immediate excitement of the Youth Tour, it’s important to recognize the broader trends regarding youth engagement in civic and volunteerism. Similar to programs facilitated within the European Union, like the European Solidarity Corps, young people in Florida are finding pathways to develop their skills and give back to the community. Interestingly, programs for youth participation have gained traction globally, allowing individuals to engage in projects ranging from social initiatives to environmental conservation. As noted on Bundesregierung, these opportunities not only foster personal growth but also enable youth to make meaningful contributions in their communities.
In this light, initiatives like CHELCO’s Youth Tour stand out as vital platforms for nurturing the leaders of tomorrow. The chance to witness the democratic process in action, such as through legislative sessions and interactions with state officials, is invaluable. It’s a meaningful experience that shapes perspectives, builds confidence, and instills a sense of civic responsibility—qualities that every young person should cultivate. With CHELCO’s commitment to community enrichment, they are indeed hitting the mark in fostering a new generation keen on making a positive impact.
The success of programs like the Youth Tour not only enhances the educational landscape for local students but also emphasizes the importance of fostering connections between youth and the structures of governance. As we look to the future, it’s clear that supporting such initiatives will pave the way for more engaged and informed citizens.
