Today is the 28th of February, 2026, and excitement is building in Destin as three legendary fishing captains are set to be inducted into the Destin Fishing Hall of Fame. This prestigious ceremony will take place on March 6, 2026, at 11 AM in the Destin Community Center. The inductees include Capt. Nick Maltezos, Capt. Delbert Marler, and Capt. Jeff Shoults, each of whom has made significant contributions to the rich fishing history of Destin.

The Destin Fishing Hall of Fame, established in 2023, honors individuals who have played a crucial role in shaping the fishing narrative of this vibrant coastal community. Over the past few years, the Hall has recognized a total of 23 remarkable individuals, including 16 in its inaugural year and four more in the second year. This year’s class of three showcases the continuing legacy of fishing in Destin.

The Inductees

Capt. Nick Maltezos, who passed away in 1982, was the son of a Greek immigrant and began his seafaring career at just 16 years old aboard the “Dreamland.” His adventurous spirit shone through when he safely navigated his crew home after encountering a hurricane while returning from Campeche, Mexico. Maltezos was also an innovator, building multiple boats, including the “Memory” and “Sweetheart,” and he discovered the now-famous Nickie Grounds, a hotspot for fishing that remains popular today. His service as a captain for Eglin Field during World War II further highlights his commitment to both community and country.

Capt. Delbert Marler, born in 1924 in Pensacola, started fishing at the tender age of 14. He dedicated 37 years to operating the “Florida Girl” and the “New Florida Girl,” gaining a reputation as a master at locating fish schools. His service in the U.S. Navy during World War II adds another layer to his remarkable life. Sadly, Marler passed away in February 2002, leaving behind a legacy that continues to inspire local fishermen.

Then there’s Capt. Jeff Shoults, who moved to Destin in 1972 at just eight years old. He became the captain of the “Mollie” at 26 and has since amassed over $6 million in tournament winnings. Notably, he won the Florida Gulf Coast Triple Crown in 2017 and was honored as the “Gulf Captain of the Year” in 2020. His impressive catches include a staggering 660.4-pound Blue Marlin. Beyond his own achievements, Shoults is known for his commitment to the community, having trained many deckhands and captains who continue to shape the local fishing scene.
