Spirit of Norfolk: Fire-Damaged Cruise Ship Transformed into Reef!

Destin, Florida, USA - The Spirit of Norfolk, once a cherished cruise boat in the city’s vibrant maritime landscape, met its demise in June 2022 after a catastrophic fire swept through its engine room during a lunch cruise, leaving 106 individuals, including 89 schoolchildren, aboard. Thanks to the swift actions of the crew and the support from the Coast Guard and neighboring vessels, everyone was safely evacuated, illustrating the professionalism and bravery of those on the scene. As Chesapeake Bay Magazine reports, the devastating blaze took nearly four days to be fully extinguished, with crews tirelessly monitoring the vessel to prevent any reignition.

After the incident, the Spirit of Norfolk was salvaged and briefly docked at a Naval Station Norfolk pier but sadly never returned to its former glory serving the City Cruises. In a new chapter for this storied vessel, it was sold in 2024 to Okaloosa County, where it was destined to become part of an artificial reef system. On July 11, 2025, the boat was sunk off the coast of Destin, Florida, at a depth of 128 feet, with the top of the vessel sitting 51 feet from the seabed. This sinking not only marked the end of an era but also served as a part of a Joint U.S. Air Force demonstration in partnership with Eglin Air Force Base.

A New Life Underwater

The transformation of the Spirit of Norfolk into an artificial reef contributes to a growing initiative aimed at bolstering marine habitats. The Okaloosa County artificial reef system will soon also include the SS United States, a project that has ignited controversy among conservationists. As it stands, the historic ship is currently being prepared for a similar sinking in Mobile, Alabama.
