Wakulla High School is making waves in the world of theater! On March 18, students from the school will compete at the Florida State Thespians Festival in Tampa, marking a significant milestone in their artistic journey. This festival is renowned as the largest theatre festival in the world for students, with over 9,500 participants from across Florida. It’s a fantastic opportunity for these young performers to shine and showcase their talents.
The students earned their coveted spots at the festival after impressing judges at the district competition in October. This year, they’ve upped their game, achieving six perfect-score events that advanced them to this prestigious state competition. Theatre teacher Krissy Sanchez has witnessed remarkable growth in the program, expanding from just 17 students to about 60 during her tenure.
Performance and Technical Mastery
At the festival, the Wakulla troupe will dive into three performance-based events, featuring two duets and a solo, alongside four tech-based events: set design, publicity design, costume, and playwriting. These diverse activities not only showcase their acting skills but also highlight the creativity and technical prowess of the students involved.
Senior Aubrey Recks will have her play featured in the Critics’ Choice, sharing how theater has significantly boosted her confidence. Meanwhile, junior Logan Hand, who snagged an acting award at the district level, is set to perform at the opening ceremonies. Hand expressed his gratitude for the support of his troupe and emphasized how vital theater has been to his high school experience.
A Community of Support
Wakulla County Schools Superintendent Richard Myhre couldn’t be prouder of the accomplishments of these talented students and their dedicated teachers. The school has also been nominated for an honor troupe position, recognizing outstanding theatre programs in Florida. Such recognition underscores the importance of participation in the arts, which has been linked to positive social and academic outcomes for high school students.
As they prepare for the Thespians Festival, the students are also gearing up for their spring musical, “The Drowsy Chaperone,” scheduled for April 30 to May 3. With so much happening, it’s clear that Wakulla High School’s theater program is on an exciting trajectory!
