On February 28, a Polar Plunge event took place at Pinchot Lake, supporting Special Olympics athletes in Central Pennsylvania. This annual event sees participants jumping into icy waters to raise funds, with many participants gathering donations from friends, family, and colleagues to secure their spots. Notably, in 2014, over 740 participants in Anoka County raised $152,000 for Special Olympics Minnesota, showcasing the power of community support for these athletes who strive for year-round sports training and competitions. The contributions not only help athletes achieve their goals but also promote healthier lifestyles and a sense of belonging within the community. Even if one can’t plunge, donations, volunteering time, or showing support are always welcome. For more details on the Polar Plunge, check out the Special Olympics.
However, not all news from Florida has been uplifting. Justin Lee Bartlett, a 36-year-old resident from Chipley, Florida, has been charged with aggravated assault and robbery. The charges stem from a disturbing incident that occurred on January 30 at a Super 8 Motel in Fairview Township. Allegedly, Bartlett drugged two men, stole their vehicle and credit cards, leading to significant repercussions for the victims.
Incident Details
The motel manager discovered the two men unconscious in their room and promptly called the police. Both were rushed to UPMC Harrisburg Hospital, where one required a tracheotomy due to severe airway damage. A search of their room by police revealed no car keys, wallets, or phones, leaving investigators with few leads. However, one of the victims had the foresight to utilize a GPS tracking device from the stolen vehicle, which was later traced to Cleveland, Tennessee.
Using surveillance footage from a Dick’s Sporting Goods in Bristol, Tennessee, police identified Bartlett, who had initially contacted the victims through the dating app Grindr under the alias “Blaze.” After picking up Bartlett at a Red Roof Inn in Harrisburg, the victims were offered alcohol, which resulted in one becoming incapacitated. Following the theft, over $2,000 in purchases or attempted purchases were made using the stolen credit and debit cards.
Bartlett was apprehended by the Bradley County Sheriff’s Office and faces multiple charges, including robbery, aggravated assault, theft, and fraud related to the use of the debit card. His bail has been set at $50,000, with a preliminary hearing scheduled for March 17. The situation serves as a stark reminder of the risks associated with trusting strangers, especially in vulnerable circumstances.
