Today, on March 6, 2026, we remember Ruthie Mae Smothers Upchurch, a remarkable woman who left us on March 3, 2026, at the age of 86. Ruthie was born on May 10, 1939, in Chipley, Florida, to Joe and Maggie Smothers. She had a zest for life that was evident from a young age, continuing her education after high school at Massey Drone Business College.
Ruthie’s journey through life was filled with love, hard work, and a deep commitment to her family. In October 1959, she married Kenneth Upchurch, and together they raised a family while living an active life on their farm. Ruthie had a green thumb, tending to her garden and preserving vegetables for many years. Her home was always open to family and friends, as they frequently shared meals and offered support to those in need.
A Life of Service and Community
Ruthie was not just a dedicated wife and mother; she also played a significant role in the agricultural community alongside Kenneth. Their work included raising chickens for Pilgrim’s Pride, combining Bahia seeds for Kaufman Seeds, and nurturing catfish for various suppliers. Additionally, they raised cattle and pigs, and harvested hay on their own land. To make trips to Florida more manageable, they even obtained their pilot’s license together.
Her contributions extended beyond her family and farm, as Ruthie was an active member of the Antioch Baptist Church for over fifty years. Serving as a pianist and organist, she brought music to the congregation and taught Sunday school and vacation Bible classes for children. Ruthie held various roles in the church, including treasurer and church employee, demonstrating her unwavering commitment to her faith and community.
