The Moore Haven Terriers varsity baseball team recently delivered an electrifying performance against the Lehigh Lightning, showcasing not only their competitive spirit but also their resilience on the field. This thrilling game took place on March 3, where the Terriers managed to clinch a dramatic walk-off victory, reminding everyone why they love the game. Lake Okeechobee News reports that the Terriers struck first during the bottom of the first inning, but Lehigh quickly turned the tables, taking a 2-1 lead in the second inning.
With the scoreboard flashing 5-5 at the end of the sixth, the intensity rose. The Terriers had rallied back, scoring two crucial runs, but there was more tension ahead. Thanks to a stout defense, the Terriers held Lehigh scoreless in the seventh inning—setting the stage for a thrilling conclusion. It was Jaelin Johnson who drove in the winning run, sealing the 6-5 victory with an impressive performance that included not only the game-winning RBI but also a double and a triple, alongside two RBIs overall. Fellow player Thaddeus Johns also made a significant contribution with three hits and an RBI of his own.
On the Softball Diamond
If you thought the excitement ended with baseball, think again. The Moore Haven Lady Terriers softball team has been making waves of its own. Just recently, in the first game of the new district tournament, the Lady Terriers eliminated the Marathon High Lady Fins with an astounding 15-0 win, bringing the game to a premature end due to the mercy rule. The Key West Citizen shared that the home-field advantage played a significant role, as Moore Haven scored a whopping nine runs in the first inning and six more in the third, achieving the victory with just eight hits total.
Despite their best efforts, Marathon couldn’t get any runners across home plate, a tough outcome for a team that fought hard throughout the season. With the loss, Marathon’s season seems to come to a close with a record of 9-7, potentially marking the end of high school careers for several of their athletes, including Dani Gonzalez, Peyton Junker, and Elena Eubank.
Looking Ahead
The Terriers’ baseball team now stands at a solid 5-4 for the season and looks ahead to a pivotal matchup against the Glades Day Gators on March 31. The Gators, currently ranked second in the district, will provide a stern test for the Terriers, who sit in the fourth spot. Adding to this positive environment, the community has shown impressive support by backing the purchase of a new scoreboard through generous donations from U.S. Sugar, First Bank, Seminole Tribe of Florida, Inc., and IMC Industrial Division.
As the Terriers continue their campaign on the diamond, both the baseball and softball teams demonstrate that with a good hand, teamwork, and a little heart, great things can be achieved. So, let’s rally behind our local teams as they strive for success in the upcoming games, reflecting the spirit of camaraderie and competitive sportsmanship that defines our community.
