Tomah, Wisconsin, USA - Rosella M. Schendel, a beloved figure in the community, passed away at the age of 91 on June 25, 2025, at Close to Home in Tomah, Wisconsin. Born on September 18, 1933, to Matt and Ottilia (Schreier) Schmid in Hillsboro, her life was a rich tapestry of family, faith, and service.

On February 18, 1950, Rosella married Darwin L. Schendel at St. Mary’s Ridge Catholic Church, embarking on a journey that would see her deeply involved in both her family and the community. She dedicated herself to work at Monroe County Telephone Company from 1948 until 1964 and later at Northern Engraving until her retirement in 1995. Throughout her life, she remained an active member of St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Indian Creek and Queen of the Apostles Parish in Tomah, where she contributed her time to the PCCW.

A Life of Love and Community

Rosella had a flair for connecting with others, affectionately known as the “candy lady” among local children for her generous treats during visits to the Amish community. She found joy in gardening, crocheting, and crafting blankets and quilts for her family. Her social spirit shone brightly as she delighted in playing cards and enjoying trips to the casino with friends.

She is survived by her daughters Dianna “Duff” Schermerhorn and Susan (Terry) Allnutt, along with three grandchildren, five great-grandchildren, and one great-great-grandson. These family connections were vital to her, reflecting the teachings of the U.S. Catholic Bishops, who emphasize the importance of familial bonds and community contributions as one ages. This sentiment is woven into their pastoral message that recognizes growing older as a privilege, one filled with opportunities for spiritual growth and engagement within the community reports the U.S. Catholic Bishops.

Celebrating a Meaningful Life

Rosella’s journey through life exemplified what it means to embrace positive aging, a concept gaining traction that focuses on well-being beyond mere physical health. In fact, many studies highlight that aspects such as spirituality and social connections are pivotal in enhancing life quality for older adults. Religion and spirituality often provide not just comfort but also a sense of meaning during life’s challenges says recent research.

A Mass of Christian Burial is planned for July 1 at 12 p.m. at Queen of the Apostles Parish in Tomah, officiated by Father Ethan Hokamp, allowing family and friends to honor her lasting impact on their lives. A visitation will precede the service from 10 a.m. until the time of the mass. Burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery in Tomah. Memorials in Rosella’s name may be directed to Queen of the Apostles Catholic Parish, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, or the Alzheimer’s Research and Treatment Center.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Christine Jacobsen and the caring staff at St. Croix Hospice and Close to Home for their compassionate support during her final days. Rosella’s life is a poignant reminder that as we age, there is a wealth of wisdom and experience to share, enriching the lives of those around us.
