Epic Day on the Appalachian Trail: One Hiker's Journey to Completion!

Key West, Florida, USA - On July 17, 2025, determination was alive on the trails as a dedicated hiker embarked on a journey to complete the Appalachian Trail (AT). Waking up at the crack of dawn, around 4 AM, this adventurer packed their gear, ready to tackle the Zealand Hut trailhead with plans to connect footpaths and finish the lengthy AT. Interestingly, their companion Taco decided to stay behind, choosing a cozy sleep-in due to inclement weather. There’s something to be said for knowing your limits!
As the morning fog lifted, the challenge ahead couldn’t be ignored. The first mile of the hike was an uphill battle, with tough terrain that sparked concerns about the day’s timing. However, as the hiker pushed through, the trail appeared to lighten, allowing for a much brisker pace. Echoes of the Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) emerged in the familiar surroundings, showcasing the shared spirit of long-distance hiking.
The Pursuit of the Triple Crown
For many who conquer the AT, the question arises: what’s next? A small percentage of hikers move forward, aiming for the prestigious “Triple Crown.” This feat entails successfully hiking the AT, PCT, and the Continental Divide Trail (CDT), totaling nearly 8,000 miles stretched across 22 states and an elevation gain surpassing one million feet. According to Greenbelly, only about 600 hikers have triumphantly completed this challenge, with 334 officially recognized by ALDHA-West.
The illustrious history of the Triple Crown began with Eric Ryback, who made history in the early 1970s as the first to complete all three trails. Since then, formidable hikers like Heather “Anish” Anderson have been making strides, with Anish attempting her third Triple Crown in a single year. Ellen C. Cryer once said that the trails often call out to adventurers locally and afar, making this pursuit an exhilarating next step for many.
Facts About the Famous Trails
Before diving into this hiking challenge, it’s essential to understand what each of these revered trails has to offer, and they each have a unique charm.
Trail | Length | Time to Complete | Highest Elevation |
---|---|---|---|
Appalachian Trail (AT) | ~2,190 miles | 5 to 7 months | 6,643 feet at Clingmans Dome |
Pacific Crest Trail (PCT) | ~2,650 miles | 4 to 6 months | 13,153 feet at Forester Pass |
Continental Divide Trail (CDT) | ~3,100 miles | 4 to 6 months | 14,278 feet at Grays Peak |
Accomplishing the AT involves steep climbs, lush forests, and a vibrant community of fellow hikers. In contrast, the PCT presents diverse landscapes, ranging from deserts to temperate rainforests, often requiring more specialized gear due to its rugged nature. Lastly, the CDT is known for its remoteness, demanding proficient navigation skills and offering a more solitary experience as compared to the other trails.
It’s worth noting that only a fraction of those who attempt a thru-hike succeed—2017 stats show that while 3,377 started the AT, only 685 made it to the end, highlighting the challenges faced every step of the way. This is certainly not a hike for the faint of heart!
The Adventure Continues
After the rigorous hikes, our aspiring adventurer reached the parking lot by 7 AM, just in time for a ride to Boston. Loosening up with a hearty breakfast, they prepped gear at the airport, swapping their hiking kit for fresh supplies while using the downtime to catch up on video and blog work. Soon, they were airborne, flying from Boston to Denver and onward to Reno before happily being picked up by Jay, a gracious Trail Angel, just before 9 PM.
Over burgers at In-N-Out and a needed resupply stop at Walmart for the crucial Sierra section, excitement buzzed for the next part of the journey. With plans to hike for nearly 17 hours the previous day, the hiker was well aware that a good rest was vital. Jay cleverly transformed the back of his truck into a cozy resting spot during their drive—proof that camaraderie exists even on arduous adventures.
As the wheels rolled towards Kennedy Meadows, reflections on the journey ahead melded with gratitude for those who’ve come before. The trails call, and every step holds a story, so get ready for what lies ahead—anything can happen amidst the wonders of nature!
