Today is April 2, 2026, and the community of Keystone Heights is still grappling with the tragic loss of Colton R. Tibbetts, a beloved young man whose life was cut short in a single car crash in Melrose on March 25. According to the Florida Highway Patrol reports, this devastating incident has left friends, family, and fellow firefighters mourning the loss of a promising individual.
Colton Tibbetts, just 23 years old, was not only a dedicated firefighter but also a dual-sport athlete at Keystone Heights High School, where he excelled in both football and basketball. Graduating in 2021, Tibbetts made a significant mark on the football field, rushing for 661 yards with an impressive average of 7.4 yards per carry and scoring 11 touchdowns during his senior season. His contributions to the basketball team as an athletic ballhandler and shooting forward also highlighted his versatile talent.
Remembering a Hero
After high school, Colton followed in the footsteps of his father, JFRD Lt. Brian Tibbetts, by joining the firefighting community. He began his career in Melrose before being hired by the Jacksonville Fire and Rescue Department (JFRD) in July 2022. Just recently, in November 2025, he was promoted to Rescue Engineer, marking a significant achievement in his young career.
A candlelight vigil was held at Keystone Beach, where friends gathered to share fond memories of Colton, reflecting the profound impact he had on those around him. His funeral service, held on March 29 at the Community Church in downtown Keystone Heights, was attended by many, including members of the Jacksonville, Clay County, and Melrose Fire Departments. The ceremony was a heartfelt tribute, featuring a 21-gun salute and the poignant sound of bagpipes playing “Amazing Grace.” As part of the tribute, Tibbetts’ helmet was carried out, and a “final call” was echoed from dispatch, a moving farewell for a dedicated firefighter.
Recent Incidents in the Firefighting Community
While the community mourns Colton’s passing, it also faces other challenges. Recently, a significant incident occurred in Delray Beach, Florida, where a Brightline train collided with a fire truck at a railway crossing. This unfortunate accident took place on a Saturday morning around 10:45 AM, resulting in injuries to three firefighters, who are reported to be in stable condition, and twelve train passengers who sustained minor injuries. Eyewitness accounts and social media footage captured the moment of impact and the subsequent damage to both the fire truck and the train.
Authorities, including local police, the train operator, and the U.S. Transportation Department, are investigating the cause of the collision, which reportedly involved the fire truck maneuvering around lowered crossing gates. This incident serves as a reminder of the dangers that firefighters and first responders face daily in their line of duty.
