Yesterday, the Florida Gators kicked off their Southeastern Conference (SEC) season with a thrilling 5-4 victory over the Missouri Tigers at the packed Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. The game was not only a great showcase of talent but also a testament to the team’s resilience, especially with Ava Brown sidelined due to a lower-body injury.
Jocelyn Erickson stepped up big time in Brown’s absence, hitting a crucial two-run homer in the sixth inning. This was Erickson’s 12th home run of the season, making her the team’s leader in that category. Her timely hit came after Taylor Shumaker singled with two outs, putting Florida ahead for good at 5-3. The Gators’ offense was electric, especially considering the game’s three lead changes.
Game Highlights
The game started on a high note for the Gators when Ella Wesolowski hit a two-out solo homer in the second inning, giving Florida an early 1-0 lead. However, Missouri quickly responded with a two-RBI double from Abby Hay, taking a 2-1 lead in the third inning. Hay, who leads Missouri with 16 RBIs, also made her mark defensively with nine putouts during the game.
Missouri extended their lead to 3-1 after Madison Uptegrove hit a solo home run. But the Gators weren’t about to back down. Townsen Thomas tied the game at 3-3 with a two-run homer in the fourth inning, showcasing Florida’s fighting spirit. The game was tied heading into the sixth, setting the stage for Erickson’s heroics.
Junior Keagan Rothrock also made headlines with her impressive pitching performance. With a record of 12-1, Rothrock pitched her sixth complete game and struck out 10 batters—her highest total against an SEC opponent—surpassing her previous best of seven strikeouts against Georgia in the Super Regionals last May. Rothrock’s poise on the mound was instrumental to the Gators’ success as the team improved to 24-1 overall and 1-0 in SEC play.
Looking Ahead
The Gators will face off against Missouri again on Sunday at 4 p.m. at Katie Seashole Pressly Stadium. With the energy from their SEC opener, fans are excited to see if Florida can carry this momentum into their next game.
