Brooksville, FL, USA - Florida’s animal welfare community is gearing up for an exciting three-day event aimed at finding loving homes for thousands of pets in need. The annual Florida MEGA Pet Adoption Event, organized in partnership with Petco Love, will take place from June 27 to June 29 at various Petco locations and local animal shelters across the state. This year’s goal is ambitious yet hopeful: to match 2,000 shelter dogs and cats with new families.

With Florida ranking 46th in the nation for saving the lives of shelter pets—a situation that saw 37,683 dogs and cats euthanized in 2024—this event is a crucial opportunity for change. Last year’s event managed to place 1,949 animals, showcasing a community spirit that is both inspiring and necessary. Nearly 50 organizations across 31 counties are coming together, demonstrating the strength of teamwork for a noble cause.

Adoption Fees Waived

One of the standout features of the MEGA event is that adoption fees will be waived at most participating locations. This means that finding a furry friend to take home has never been more accessible. All pets available for adoption during the event are set to be spayed or neutered and come fully vaccinated, ensuring they are healthy companions for families.

Locations will host adoption drives, including Hernando County Sheriff’s Office / Animal Services, which will operate from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day in Brooksville. If you’re in the South Florida area, you have multiple Petco options:

  • Petco South Miami: 6200 South Dixie Highway, Miami, FL 33143 (June 27-28: 9 a.m.-9 p.m., June 29: 10 a.m.-7 p.m.)

The Bigger Picture

The need for such events is underscored by national data on animal welfare. Roughly 6.3 million pets enter U.S. shelters every year, and according to Pet Radar, about 920,000 shelter animals are euthanized annually. However, times are changing. With ongoing efforts, such as TNR (Trap-Neuter-Return) programs for feral cats and increased awareness about the importance of spaying and neutering, our communities are making strides.

On the other hand, overcrowding continues to be a major issue, particularly in areas with large stray populations. Florida, Texas, California, North Carolina, and Alabama account for nearly half of all euthanasia cases, but the tide is turning. Efforts like the MEGA event are vital in changing narratives and saving lives.

So, why not be part of the solution? Whether you’re looking to adopt, foster, or simply support local shelters, now is the time to get involved. Together, we can help alleviate the struggles facing our four-legged friends while enriching our own lives.
