Two Arrested After Teen Shot in Riverview: Violence Rocks Progress Village

On June 4, 2025, the calm of Progress Village, a community in Hillsborough County, was shattered by a shooting incident that left a teenager injured. According to the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office, the shooting took place around 12:39 p.m. near South 81st Street and Fir Drive. A juvenile victim was found with a single gunshot wound and subsequently transported to a local hospital. Thankfully, the injuries were non-life-threatening, but the incident highlights an ongoing concern with gun violence in the area. The authorities acted swiftly, conducting a traffic stop leading to the arrest of 38-year-old Antonio House, whose vehicle was identified as linked to the shooting (TampaFP).

The investigation deepened when officers executed a search warrant at House’s residence in Riverview. Inside, they discovered multiple firearms, including a Glock .40 caliber handgun, which has been linked to the shooting through ballistic evidence. This troubling find led to the arrests of 17-year-old Zoe’yae Jackson and 18-year-old Jaheim House, who were found with additional evidence in their shared bedroom. Jaheim now faces serious charges, including six counts of being a Felon in Possession of a Firearm, while Zoe’yae is charged with attempted murder among a litany of other offenses (TampaFP).

The Bigger Picture: Crime Trends in Hillsborough County

This recent shooting is part of a broader issue with crime in Hillsborough County. Analysis from SpotCrime shows a troubling trend in violent crime, which has increased by 1% over the last month. While property crime, including thefts and burglaries, has seen a decrease of 4%, violent acts such as assaults and shootings are still alarmingly present. Over the last month, there were 308 assaults and 39 shootings reported in the area. Just last week alone, authorities tallied 14 shootings among other incidents, highlighting the challenges local law enforcement faces in curbing violence.

Interestingly, despite the rise in violent crime, overall crime rates are down by 2% compared to the previous month. This indicates that while violent incidents are creating a stir, crime in general is on a downward trajectory. The community must, however, remain vigilant as they navigate these challenging dynamics.

Addressing Youth Involvement and Future Prevention

The intersection of youth and crime remains particularly concerning. The Florida Department of Juvenile Justice operates numerous facilities aimed at rehabilitating young offenders rather than simply punishing them. They emphasize education and mental health services to help youths transition back into society. Programs under the DJJ aim to provide resources from supervision and education to substance abuse support, working to prevent further criminal behavior (DJJ).

As Hillsborough County grapples with the implications of this recent shooting, Sheriff Chad Chronister underscores a commitment to tackle violence head-on and hold offenders responsible for their actions. As local residents ponder the safety of their neighborhoods, it’s essential to consider both the immediate and long-term strategies necessary to curtail crime and promote community safety.
