It is with great sadness that we report the passing of G. Donald (Don) Adams, who left us at the age of 85 on December 5, 2025. Don was more than just a resident of Sanibel; he was a vibrant part of the community, known for his extensive work as a museum marketing and public relations specialist. His passions extended beyond the professional realm, encompassing bicycling, travel writing, photography, and, of course, a profound love for history.
Don’s professional journey was impressive. He served as the External Relations Officer at the Henry Ford Museum and Greenfield Village in Dearborn, Michigan, and later took the helm as the Director of the Automotive Hall of Fame. After retiring, he became a management consultant, helping museums across the country enhance their outreach and educational efforts. In his later years, he made his home on Sanibel Island and subsequently moved to the Shell Point Retirement Community in Fort Myers, where he continued to share his love for history through lectures at the Shell Point Academy of Life-Long Learning.
Community Contributions
Don’s dedication to preserving the rich history of Sanibel was evident in his role with the Sanibel Historical Preservation Committee, where he led efforts to produce the Sanibel Heritage Trail Markers. His commitment to the community did not go unnoticed; he was honored as a Legacy Artist by the Tribby Arts Center, a recognition that highlights his contributions to the arts and culture in the region.
As an author, Don penned four books, including “Alleluia: Stories of an Island and a Church.” This particular work offers a detailed look at the history of Sanibel Island and the Saint Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church, capturing the essence of what made this place special to him and many others. His words will continue to inspire future generations and preserve the legacy of the island’s rich history.
Family and Remembrance
Don is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Jane Adams, along with his nephew Stephen Halleran and cousins Linda Lyon, Marcia Syrett, Janice Braley, and Debra Zoltanski. A memorial service is scheduled for 2 p.m. on February 21 at Saint Michael & All Angels Episcopal Church, located at 2304 Periwinkle Way, Sanibel. Those wishing to honor Don’s memory can make remembrances to the Saint Michael’s Madden Fund, Shell Point Friendship Fund, or the Gulf Coast Humane Society.
As we reflect on Don’s life and contributions, it becomes clear that his legacy will endure. The impact he made on the Sanibel community and beyond is a testament to a life well-lived, filled with passion, creativity, and a commitment to sharing knowledge. We encourage everyone to celebrate his memory and the many ways he enriched our lives.
