Beloved Youngstown Native Judith Martin Passes Away at 83 in Florida

The sun has set on the life of Judith Ann Maga Martin, who passed away on July 27, 2025, in New Port Richey, Florida, while under hospice care. Judith was born on September 19, 1941, in Youngstown, Ohio, to Arnold and Helen Repasky Maga. A journey that began in Ohio saw her blossom into a devoted family member and community participant before culminating in her passionate later years spent in Florida.

Judy, as she was affectionately known, graduated from Rayen High School and pursued a career in cosmetology, becoming a talented hairdresser. It was at the candy counter in Woolworth’s where she met her husband, Tom Martin, sparking a relationship that led to their marriage on January 25, 1964, at St. Casimir Church in Youngstown. Together, they raised a family and built a life that would span decades.

A Life of Service and Joy

Before fully dedicating herself to her family, Judy worked as a telephone operator for Ohio Bell, a stepping stone that enhanced her knack for connecting with people. Eventually, she embraced the role of a stay-at-home mother, a decision that showcased her commitment to her children’s well-being. Her professional journey concluded as a bookkeeper at Penn Ohio College, marking a fulfilling career.

In 2001, Judy and Tom made the significant decision to relocate to Florida, a move sparked by their desire to be closer to their children and grandchildren. It was this second act that truly opened up new avenues for her interests and activities.

In Florida, Judy thrived in her community, actively participating in the Red Hat Society and the Timber Greens Bowling League. She found joy in tai chi and water aerobics and, quite remarkably, at the age of 60, she discovered swimming, committing to daily practices that sometimes saw her glide through the water for up to one mile. Her zest for life and commitment to health was evident in these pursuits.

A Cherished Family Legacy

Baking was another of Judy’s loves, with annual family reunions back in Youngstown serving as a cherished tradition for baking nostalgia and making memories. At the core of her being was her devotion to faith; she remained a devoted Catholic, regularly attending Mass at St. Christine Parish in Youngstown and later at St. Thomas Aquinas Parish in New Port Richey.

Judy leaves behind a robust family legacy, including three children—Tom (Angel), Larry (Tamara), and Laurie—and five grandchildren: Tommy, John, Ryan, Kara, and Matt (Jaida) Martin. Her husband, Tom Martin, passed away just shy of their 60th anniversary on September 24, 2023, adding a bittersweet note to her life story.

Following her passing, Judy was laid to rest in a private ceremony on August 8, 2025, at Trinity Memorial Gardens in New Port Richey, a resting place beside her beloved husband. The family has requested donations to the Alzheimer’s Association, honoring a cause that resonates deeply with many families today.

Reflections on Judith: A Modern-Day Judith?

In reflecting on Judy’s life, one might consider the parallels to the Biblical figure Judith, a strong woman known for her bravery and cunning, who saved her people in the face of insurmountable odds. The Book of Judith tells the story of a widow who uses her intelligence and beauty to defeat the Assyrian general Holofernes, symbolizing the strength of women throughout history. Like this celebrated character, Judy embodied resilience and tenacity, bringing joy and comfort to those around her—a true testament to her spirit and character.

While some debate the historicity of events within the Biblical narrative, there’s no question about the profound impact Judith Ann Maga Martin had on her family and friends. The legacy she leaves is one of love, resilience, and cherished memories that will live on through those who had the pleasure of knowing her.
