Pinellas County, Florida, USA - June 6, 2025 – In a move that indicates the ongoing dedication to maintaining standards within the construction industry, Pinellas County is now seeking applicants for six vacancies on the Pinellas County Construction Licensing Board (PCCLB). Applications are due by 3 PM on August 8, 2025, and residents are encouraged to consider this opportunity to impact local construction practices directly.

The PCCLB, a board comprised of 15 members, represents a diverse array of fields, including construction trades, building officials, a fire official, and two consumer representatives. This eclectic mix ensures that various perspectives are taken into account when making decisions that affect the community. The board is particularly looking for applicants in several areas:

  • Mechanical contractor or Class A air conditioning contractor
  • Roofing or sheet metal contractor
  • Swimming pool contractor
  • Specialty structure contractor or veneer specialty contractor
  • Consumer representative not affiliated with the construction industry
  • South County building official from St. Petersburg, South Pasadena, Gulfport, Seminole, Kenneth City, or Pinellas Park

Who Can Apply?

All board members are appointed by the Pinellas County Board of County Commissioners, and applicants must be residents of Pinellas County, with the exception of the building official. Each of the appointees will serve a four-year term but are limited to two consecutive terms. After a two-year hiatus, they may be eligible for reappointment. Interestingly, the rule regarding consecutive terms does not apply to governmental building official or fire official appointees.

Every board member is also required to file an annual limited financial disclosure FORM 1 by July 1 for the prior year, ensuring transparency and accountability. All applicants must adhere to the County’s Standards for Conduct for Citizen Appointees. Those interested in applying can find application materials at www.pinellascounty.org/boards. Please remember that all submitted materials are subject to Florida’s public records law.

Current Industry Alerts

PCCLB is currently issuing important alerts to the public. An email spoofing alert warns residents about counterfeit emails pretending to come from the organization. These emails often contain links to fraudulent DocuSign documents and should be deleted promptly.

Moreover, with the onset of hurricane season, residents experiencing storm damage are cautioned to hire only licensed contractors. Before signing any agreements, they should verify the contractor’s credentials, including their name, license number, and proof of insurance. For those wanting to check a contractor’s state certification, the Florida Department of Business and Professional Regulation offers a handy verification tool online at www.myfloridalicense.com.

In Florida, unlicensed contractors can face fines starting at $500, and the county does not recognize licenses from outside jurisdictions—meaning that all contractors must be licensed in Florida to work here. However, in certain cases, temporary licenses may be granted to specialty contractors based on damage assessments.

Additionally, as of June 24, 2024, state-certified contractors will no longer need to register or renew with the PCCLB to operate in Pinellas County, as long as they provide proof of their state license and valid insurance to obtain necessary permits.

Renewal and Compliance Tips

For county-certified and local specialty contractors, bear in mind that the renewal deadline has been extended to October 31, 2024. Late fees will start accumulating from November 1, 2024. As always, ensure that your insurance is up to date; certificates should clearly indicate that PCCLB is the certificate holder. Upload your insurance certificates via the Pinellas County Access Portal for a smoother service experience. Remember, penalties may apply for expired insurance or workers‘ compensation exemptions.

For any in-person services, clients are encouraged to text „PCCLB“ to (727) 472-4163 or use the online service to reserve their spot in line. Payment options for citation and administrative fines are also outlined on the PCCLB website.

Your participation in county boards and adherence to industry standards not only fosters a vibrant construction community but also contributes to preserving the safety and integrity of our neighborhoods. Whether you’re applying for a board position or hiring a contractor, staying informed is key. Let’s keep Pinellas County in tip-top shape!
