Beloved Alpena Community Member Diane Bromund Passes at 69
Diane Beverly Bromund, a beloved figure known for her warmth and community spirit, passed away at the age of 69 on August 23, 2025, in Posen, Michigan, surrounded by her loving family. Born on September 27, 1955, at a naval base in Millington, Tennessee, Diane was the daughter of Reginald and Sibyl Carlson. She spent her formative years in Lemon Grove, California, where she blossomed both academically and athletically. Notably, she was crowned Homecoming Queen at Mt. Miguel High School and became an award-winning swimmer—a testament to her vibrant spirit and determination. The San Diego Union Tribune reports that her journey through education continued at San Diego State University, leading her to a fulfilling career as a Regional Supervisor at San Diego Gas and Electric for a decade.
It was in San Diego that she met her soulmate, Jim Bromund, during his Navy service, and the two tied the knot 43 years ago. Together, they relocated to Alpena, Michigan, to nurture their family and stay closer to loved ones. Diane’s legacy lives on through her husband, Jim, three children—Heather Bromund (partner Rusty) of San Diego, Kelly Lewis (husband Shawn) of Swartz Creek, and Derek Bromund of Clearwater—and her three cherished granddaughters: Brenna, Lily, and Hayley. She is also survived by her nephew, Sam Bromund, and her siblings, Lesley and Donald, along with their families. Echovita elaborates on the support Diane received from her family throughout her life, with many fond memories created together.
A Life of Service and Community
Diane was more than just a wife and mother; she was deeply involved in her community. She worked as a transition specialist for the local school district, focusing on helping students navigate important life changes. Additionally, her passion for sports led her to support the Alpena High School Softball Team, where her commitment to youth and education showcased her selfless nature.
Her adventures with Jim took them far and wide, touring national parks and countries around the globe. The couple’s last trip was to Healdsburg, California, in June for her niece’s wedding, a journey that encapsulated her love for family and exploration. Diane’s adventurous spirit and zest for life captured the essence of who she was.
Celebration of Life
To honor Diane’s remarkable life and contributions, a celebration of life will be held on September 5, 2025, from 1 PM to 3 PM at JJ’s Banquet Hall in Alpena. Family and friends are encouraged to gather and share stories that highlight Diane’s impact on their lives. There will also be a future celebration in San Diego, details of which will be announced later.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made in her memory to the ACC (Alpena Community College) endowment, a cause close to Diane’s heart. McWilliams Funeral Home has assisted the family during this time, and condolences can be sent online at mcwilliamsfh.com. Writing an obituary, as emphasized by Charity Smith, serves as a heartfelt tribute to honor the person’s life and impact, ensuring that their memory lives on.
