Today is the 27th of March, 2026, and Clearwater is buzzing with excitement as Mark Sprague steps into his new role as the Director of the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE). Announced by County Administrator Barry Burton, Sprague’s promotion follows a solid groundwork laid since he joined PIE in 2015, initially serving as the Deputy Director and later as the Interim Director. His wealth of experience, spanning over a decade in overseeing operations and long-term planning, has positioned him perfectly to lead the airport into its next chapter.
With a robust background in the aviation industry, including roles as an Airline Transport Pilot for Comair and Spirit Airlines, Sprague has honed his skills at major airports like Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International. This expertise will be crucial as he embarks on managing some of the largest infrastructure projects in PIE’s history, costing over $170 million. These projects include a new parking garage set to open in the spring of 2028, with construction beginning early next year, and a renovation and new construction of the terminal building, which is currently in the early design phase.
Future Vision for PIE
Sprague has made it clear that addressing inefficiencies and updating the aging infrastructure is one of his top priorities. He plans to implement a “vision with a purpose” that focuses on the future development of PIE, ensuring it remains a vital transportation hub for the Tampa Bay region. This vision comes at a time when PIE is experiencing significant growth, driven largely by budget airlines and increasing leisure travel.
In February, PIE marked its 13th consecutive month of record-breaking passenger numbers, welcoming 199,927 travelers—a 3% increase compared to the previous year. As of March, Sprague reports another uptick in passenger traffic, which is expected to set yet another record for the airport. With PIE being recognized by Kayak as the second cheapest airport in the U.S. right after Orlando Sanford International Airport, it’s no wonder that travelers are flocking to its gates.
Financial Health and Growth Potential
Another feather in PIE’s cap is its debt-free status, allowing all upcoming projects to be financed through reserves. This financial health provides a solid foundation for Sprague to implement his plans without the burden of debt. His ability to guide PIE through this next developmental phase is bolstered by his knowledge of operational analysis, emergency management, and compliance with regulations set forth by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA).
As Sprague takes the helm, the future looks bright for St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport. With strategic planning and a focus on modernization, PIE is set to enhance its role as a key player in Florida’s aviation landscape.
