Mark Sprague has taken the helm as the new director of the St. Pete-Clearwater International Airport (PIE), a role he officially stepped into last week. Having been part of the airport since 2015, Sprague brings a wealth of experience, initially working as the deputy director before serving as the interim director. His appointment, announced by County Administrator Barry Burton, comes at a pivotal time for PIE as it looks to navigate significant developments and enhance its services.

With over a decade of experience overseeing operations and long-term planning at PIE, Sprague is set to lead what is touted to be the largest infrastructure project in the airport’s history—worth over $170 million. Planned projects include a brand-new parking structure estimated at $60 million, slated to open in the spring of 2028, and a renovation and construction of a terminal building expected to cost more than $110 million. As Sprague noted, there’s a pressing need to address inefficiencies and upgrade aging infrastructure to meet current demands.

Looking Ahead

He envisions a “vision with a purpose” as part of the airport’s future development strategy. The parking facility construction is anticipated to kick off early next year, while renovations on the old terminal and the new terminal building remain in the early design phases. Notably, PIE is in a strong financial position, boasting zero debt and funding for these projects coming from its reserves.

Sprague’s experience within airport operations is extensive, having served not just at PIE but also at renowned airports such as Ronald Reagan Washington National and Washington Dulles International. His background includes strategic planning, daily operations, and emergency management—a skill set deemed critical for leading PIE into its next phase of growth.

This growth is already evident; according to Bay News 9, PIE experienced a notable increase in passenger numbers this March, poised to break records for the 14th consecutive month. In fact, the airport had its 13th month of record figures last February, witnessing 199,927 passengers—a 3% increase compared to the same month in the previous year.

Competitive Landscape

PIE is emerging not only as a crucial transit point for the Tampa Bay Area but also garnered recognition as the second cheapest airport in the United States, as ranked by Kayak, just behind the Orlando Sanford International Airport. This accolade stems largely from the rise of low-cost airlines and increasing leisure travel, factors that have played significantly into its recent growth pattern.

There’s important context to this local scenario as well. The aviation sector is witnessing robust growth globally. As noted by Aviation Direct, regional airports in Germany reported impressive passenger figures, despite some airlines scaling back services. This trend marks a return to travel enthusiasm, prompting airports worldwide to adapt strategically to maintain their competitive edge.

In light of these developments, Sprague’s leadership will likely play a crucial role in ensuring PIE not only adapts to changes in the aviation landscape but thrives, enhancing passenger experience while supporting the growth of the Tampa Bay region. As the coming years unfold, it becomes vital that the groundwork he lays today positions PIE favorably for both travelers and the community alike.

In summary, with concrete plans for future expansion and an upward trajectory in passenger growth, Mark Sprague’s directorial role at PIE signals a promising chapter for the airport and the wider region.
