It is with a heavy heart that we report the passing of Howard Shelton Brown, who left this world on March 5, 2026, at 2:25 a.m. Born on September 10, 1929, in Jasper, Florida, Howard was a man of many accomplishments and deep community ties, making his mark in various spheres throughout his life.
Howard was the son of Trudie Johnson Brown and Israel Shelton Brown, both of whom have passed away. At a young age, his family relocated to Nichols, Florida, where he continued his education. He graduated from Mulberry High School before moving on to Florida Southern College in Lakeland, Florida, where he completed his studies in 1950. During his college years, Howard was an active member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity, forming lifelong friendships.
A Life of Service and Commitment
After completing his education, Howard served his country in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean Conflict, showcasing his dedication to service. Following his military tenure, he embarked on a successful career in the banking industry, working in both Tampa and Dunedin, Florida. His professional journey included a notable position as Vice President of Southeast Bank.
In 1975, Howard made his way to Atlantic Beach, having relocated from the Tampa/Clearwater area just two years earlier. His commitment to community service was evident through his involvement with organizations such as the Beaches Toastmaster Club and the Jacksonville Beaches Kiwanis Club, where he held the position of past president. His faith was also a cornerstone of his life; he became a member of Neptune Baptist Church in Neptune Beach in 1973, serving as Deacon and Treasurer.
Remembering Howard
Howard is survived by his nephew Charles D. Brown II of Granite City, IL. He was preceded in death by his cherished wife Hazel Harmon Brown, his brother Charles D. Brown, and his nephew Terry Brown. A graveside committal service is scheduled for March 16, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Jacksonville National Cemetery, where friends and family will gather to honor his memory. The service will be officiated by Carlos Jones.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Neptune Baptist Church in Howard’s name, allowing his legacy of kindness and service to continue within the community he cherished.
