As the sun set on the Seminole Beach Bash at the Florida State Beach Volleyball Courts, the competition was fierce and the stakes high. The North Florida Beach Volleyball team, ranked No. 16, faced a challenging day, splitting their matches on the final day of the event. They kicked off with a tough loss to the No. 14 Florida Atlantic team, falling 4-1, but rallied to secure a victory against RV South Florida, winning 3-2. This day of highs and lows showcased the resilience and talent of the North Florida players, especially senior Madison Espy and sophomore Natalie Villalon, who not only won both their matches but also achieved three consecutive wins over the weekend.
In their duel with South Florida, North Florida shone brightly. Junior Cameron Humphries and senior Mackenzie Murphy clinched a win at the one line, while senior Presley Murray and redshirt junior Sophia Notaro added another victory at the two line. Espy and Villalon sealed the match with their triumph at the four line, overcoming a first-set loss to win the next two sets convincingly. Notably, four out of five matches against Florida Atlantic went to a deciding third set, highlighting the competitive spirit in the air. Freshman duo Samantha Crosby and Kamryn McDonald also added excitement by pushing their match to a third set at the three line after a strong second-set win.
Florida State’s Strong Performances
Meanwhile, the Florida State University (FSU) beach volleyball team, ranked No. 6, was also in action at the Seminole Beach Bash. The team found success on the final day, first sweeping UNC Wilmington (UNCW) 5-0, with all matches won in straight sets. Bailey Higgins and Maddie Trusty led the charge on court five, posting impressive scores of 21-8 and 21-10. Other standout performances included Alexis Durish and Audrey Koenig, who triumphed over their UNCW opponents with a score of 21-19, 21-8, while Jordan Boulware and Audrey Rothman secured their win with a narrow 21-19, 21-18 finish.
However, FSU faced a tougher challenge when they squared off against No. 7 TCU, narrowly losing the dual 3-2. Alexis Durish and Audrey Koenig were a bright spot, winning on court one. Yet, despite their efforts, the team couldn’t clinch the overall victory, with other matches not going their way. The Seminoles will look to bounce back in their upcoming competitions against No. 15 Stetson and Texas A&M – Corpus Christi on March 11.
