Beloved Kalona matriarch Emma Miller, 85, passes away at home

Sarasota, Florida, USA - In a heartfelt farewell, Emma Miller, an engrained figure of the Kalona community, passed away peacefully at the age of 85 in her home on June 13, 2025. Known for her warm spirit and community dedication, Emma was born on September 12, 1939, to Jeff and Laura (Bontrager) Ropp in rural Kalona. Her life was a tapestry of faith, family, and service, which are fondly remembered by those she touched throughout her years.
Emma’s devotion to her faith was evident as she accepted Jesus as her Saviour at a young age and became a faithful member of the Sharon Bethel Church. Her commitment didn’t end there; for over 62 years, Emma shared life with her husband Oren Dale Miller, marrying on September 15, 1960. Together, they farmed until Oren’s retirement in 2018. Their partnership set a beautiful example in their community.
A Legacy of Love
Emma was a devoted mother, surviving by her four children: Marlin Eugene (wife Fern) of Washington, Virginia Faye, Juanita Grace, and Jasmine Nicole (Miller) Swantz, all from Kalona. Her legacy also includes an impressive lineage of 12 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren whom she loved dearly. Family gatherings were events filled with joy, laughter, and the familiar aroma of meals that Emma often prepared, earning her a beloved spot in the hearts of many.
Beyond her family life, Emma’s contributions to the community were remarkable. She frequently cooked meals for the Kalona Historical Society, showing her willingness to lend a helping hand. Quilting was another passion that allowed her to share warmth not just physically but also emotionally as she crafted blankets and quilts for those in need.
Remembering Emma
The community will have a chance to pay their respects at the visitation on June 16, 2025, at Sharon Bethel Church, held from 12:00 – 4:00 pm and again from 6:00 – 8:00 pm. The funeral service will follow on June 17, 2025, at 10:00 am at the same church, culminating in a burial at Sharon Bethel Cemetery, where she will find her eternal resting place.
Emma is also survived by five siblings, including Vera Mast of Sarasota, Florida, and other Ropp family members across various states. Although she faced loss with the passing of her husband Oren in 2020, as well as a grandson and a great-granddaughter, her faith and the love surrounding her have provided solace through life’s adversities. A general memorial fund has been established in her honor.
The Yoder-Powell Funeral Home is managing the arrangements, ensuring that Emma receives the tribute she so richly deserves. During her time in the Kalona community, Emma epitomized what it means to be a pillar of love, strength, and faith, leaving behind a legacy that will certainly endure.
For additional details on memorial services and her life, local residents are encouraged to visit Johnson Family Funeral Home.
In a distinct contrast, another Emma Miller, this one aged 88, recently passed as well, highlighting the profound history of our community members. Her services will be held on June 19, 2025, at the Sharon Center United Methodist Church, which may remind us all just how entwined our lives can be in the fabric of local history and shared experiences.
