As of today, May 1, 2026, Duval County, Florida, has officially rolled out fines for drivers who violate school bus stop arm camera regulations. This initiative is part of a broader effort to enhance safety for students as they board and exit school buses.

Beginning this month, approximately 900 school buses in Duval County Public Schools are equipped with cameras specifically designed to catch drivers who fail to stop for children. During a warning phase in April 2023, 803 incidents were reviewed, resulting in 609 citations approved and 194 rejected. Starting today, the warnings issued during that period will convert into fines of $225.

Details on the Enforcement

Among the streets with the highest number of warnings issued between April 1 and April 21, 2023, the 3800 block of Blanding Blvd topped the list with 211 tickets, followed closely by the 1800 block of Edgewood Ave W with 166. The cameras utilize artificial intelligence to monitor violations, ensuring that all recorded infractions are thoroughly reviewed by school police before citations are issued. This includes live feeds, photos, vehicle images, license plate captures, and time-stamped recordings.

According to Florida law, drivers must come to a complete stop when a school bus activates its red lights and stop arm, with a few exceptions such as when there’s a raised median. If a driver receives a citation, they have the right to contest it and will be provided with the same evidence reviewed by law enforcement. Importantly, these fines do not carry points on the driver’s license, making them less punitive than other traffic violations.

Community Impact and Safety Initiatives

Duval County has brought on two officers to oversee the review of violations during this initial warning phase, and a summer break after the program launches will allow for analysis of the data and possible adjustments to personnel. This is a proactive approach, especially considering the issues that have arisen from similar programs in other counties, such as Miami-Dade, where additional fees became a concern.
