Today, on March 10, 2026, the Key Biscayne Children & Education Foundation (KBCEF) is excited to announce the expansion of their after-school enrichment programs at the K-8 Center, in partnership with Miami-Dade County Public Schools and the YMCA. This initiative marks a significant step forward for KBCEF, as confirmed by Oscar Sardiñas, the foundation’s president and co-founder. The expansion comes after receiving approval from the district and is designed to enhance the existing public school model by providing accessible, high-quality after-school offerings for students.
KBCEF operates independently as a nonprofit organization dedicated to supporting students and teachers. Over the past six years, the foundation has successfully implemented programs at St. Agnes Academy, Motivating Minds, and on the Village Green. The upcoming programs will be conveniently offered directly on the K-8 Center campus, catering to local demand and collaborating closely with school administration.
Enrichment Opportunities for Students
The new initiative aims to strengthen the educational experience by providing nine-week enrichment cycles led by certified teachers and aligned instructors. These small group programs will cover a variety of subjects, including creative writing, robotics, math, ESOL, leadership training, gardening, sustainability, and sports. This diversity ensures that students can explore different interests in a supportive environment.
Moreover, the expansion includes new offerings specifically designed for middle school students, featuring Algebra support, leadership development, robotics, and sustainability education. As part of the program, teachers collaborating with KBCEF have described their experiences as professional and collaborative, fostering an enriching atmosphere for both educators and students.
The management of registration, logistics, insurance, and administration will be handled by KBCEF, providing families with convenience and peace of mind while ensuring students have access to structured enrichment opportunities. A portion of the program revenues will also support school initiatives, including funding classroom resources and teacher support.
Role of the YMCA in Youth Development
The YMCA plays a pivotal role in this collaboration, believing that all youth have great potential and deserve the opportunity to discover themselves and develop their skills. The YMCA’s youth development programs in Miami cater to school-aged children and include offerings before and after school, as well as summer programs. These programs are designed to promote values, skills, and relationships that lead to positive behaviors, better health, and academic success.
By creating a safe, nurturing, and fun environment, the YMCA ensures that activities are age-appropriate and developmentally suitable. Their after-school programs run Monday through Friday for 180 days during the school year, from school dismissal until 6 PM, accommodating early dismissal on Wednesdays. Summer programs continue this commitment, operating from 8 AM to 6 PM, providing children with engaging and enriching experiences all year round.
Supporting the Future of Our Youth
The expansion of these programs not only benefits individual students but also addresses broader societal needs. Education is crucial for the future of our children and youth, and families often need support in social, economic, psychological, and health-related areas. Programs like those offered by KBCEF and the YMCA contribute significantly to the well-being and social participation of youth.
Funding sources for such initiatives can come from various channels, including state and private grants, media funds, social lotteries, and corporate sponsorships. As these programs evolve, they offer vital resources and opportunities that help combat issues like child poverty and ensure that the rights and well-being of children and youth are prioritized.
As enrollment for the upcoming cycle opens soon, families in Key Biscayne can look forward to a wealth of opportunities designed to enrich their children’s educational experiences. For more information, visit the Islander News and YMCA South Florida.
