As we approach Mother’s Day on Sunday, May 10, it’s the perfect time to pause, reflect, and celebrate the extraordinary mothers in our community—those who not only juggle countless responsibilities but often do it with a smile. This special edition of our magazine aims to shine a light on the remarkable women of Key Biscayne and beyond, recognizing their endless contributions.
The original idea was to select a handful of mothers and organize their stories by profession or interest group. However, as we dove deeper, we uncovered so many incredible narratives that we found ourselves challenged by the sheer number of inspiring women deserving recognition. It’s worth noting, though, that we couldn’t feature every mother in this edition. Our heartfelt apologies to those whose stories we weren’t able to include, but please know that we recognize and honor the work of all mothers, whether highlighted in print or not.
Celebrating Our Local Superheroes
Among the shining examples of modern motherhood, we can’t help but mention Mariella Alejandra Oliva and Maria Carolina Jaso, two dedicated staff members whose hard work and commitment inspire everyone around them. Personal reflections remind us of our own mothers, who faced the trials of motherhood head-on. I often think about my daughter Gabrielle, who balances her role as a business vice president while being a mother herself—talk about multitasking!
Our community boasts mothers who are making waves in various fields. Whether it’s Barbara Diaz, Laura Teran Zapata, Chiara Bergonzi, and Milagros Ponce de Leon paving the way for inclusion, or Laudy Ibarra and Maria Thorne shaping young minds as educators, these women embody strength and resilience. Community advocates like Melissa White, Christina Bracken, and Helena Iturralde work tirelessly to improve our neighborhoods, while those in the food industry, like Mariella Tello and Gabriela Silva, fill our plates with love and care.
Let’s not forget the powerhouse mothers in real estate—Viviana Franchy, Irene Rojas, and Dolores Urdapilleta—who navigate a competitive market with grace. And we have to give a shoutout to the single moms in our community, including Viviana Franchy, Xiomara Cortés, and Alessandra Zurek, who often carry the weight of the world on their shoulders. Behind each of their stories, there’s a woman giving her all, showcasing what it truly means to be a mother today.
As we celebrate these incredible women, it’s essential to remember that each story is unique. They are all woven together by a shared experience of love, sacrifice, and determination.
