The Florida State University (FSU) women’s basketball team is off to a promising start this season, improving to 2-0 after a hard-fought victory against Georgia Southern on Thursday night. Despite facing some early challenges, the Seminoles managed to rally back and secure the win.
In the opening quarter, FSU found themselves trailing 11-2, largely due to a 7-0 run by Georgia Southern. The Seminoles struggled with ball control, committing 13 turnovers that Georgia Southern capitalized on, scoring in transition and racking up eight steals. FSU’s shooting stats showed some room for improvement, making 28 of 72 attempts from the field (38.9%) and hitting 8 of 24 from beyond the arc (33.3%). On the other hand, Georgia Southern faced their own shooting woes, managing only 30.6% of their attempts.
Defensive Dominance and Key Players
FSU’s defense played a pivotal role in the victory, recording eight blocks, with senior center Avery Treadwell contributing three of those. The Seminoles did not take the lead until the second quarter, where they managed to pull ahead to a 39-36 halftime score. The game remained closely contested, but FSU maintained control, especially on the defensive end.
As the game progressed, a crucial three-point basket by Emma Risch gave FSU a 71-64 lead with four minutes left on the clock. Sydney Bowles, who along with Sole Williams led the team in scoring with 15 points each, sealed the victory with a two-point jumper. Allie Kubek also had a noteworthy performance, adding 12 points and grabbing seven rebounds.
