On March 2, Deputy Jose Rivera of the Volusia County Sheriff’s Office faced a life-threatening situation while responding to a vandalism call in Deltona. The incident unfolded when Rivera and his trainee approached the home of Luis Diaz Polanco. As the deputies attempted to question Polanco, he unexpectedly opened fire, shooting a total of 12 rounds at the officers. Rivera was struck three times, but a bullet hit his body camera, likely preventing a fatal injury, as reported by Click Orlando.

Rivera expressed immense gratitude for surviving the ordeal, noting the importance of being there to watch his family, especially his children, grow up. Thankfully, despite the severity of his injuries, he is expected to make a full recovery and is eager to return to active duty. Currently, he is set to transition to light duty this week for about a month before taking on the role of a K-9 handler on the Crime Suppression Team.

The Incident Unfolds

Body camera footage from the incident revealed the harrowing moments as Rivera and his trainee approached the residence on Candler Drive. Once they spotted Polanco, he retreated inside, only to reopen the door armed and ready to fire. The bullets struck Rivera in his thigh and shoulder, while one hit his body camera, which ultimately saved his life. After being shot, Rivera was swiftly pulled to safety by his fellow deputies, who immediately applied tourniquets and rushed him to the hospital.

In a chilling reveal, Sheriff Mike Chitwood disclosed that Polanco had intended to kill the deputies, stating, “Shoot them in their vest, and if I didn’t run out of ammunition, I would have killed them all.” Following the traumatic event, it was reported that Polanco had been in crisis due to running out of psychiatric medication and missing doctor’s appointments for a month.

Community Support and Recovery

As Rivera recuperates at home, he has not only received medical care but also financial support. A nonprofit organization has provided him with a $1,500 grant to help cover medical bills. The president of Running 4 Heroes expressed their support for Rivera’s recovery, hoping to see him return to service soon. Both Rivera and his trainee remain committed to serving their community, demonstrating remarkable resilience in the face of adversity.
